Man sentenced to three years
A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to almost three years in prison after pleading guilty to common-law robbery, a holdup without the use of a weapon.
Bruce Wiggins, who had addresses on Fussell Street in Goldsboro and in Greene County, was sentenced by Wayne County Superior Court Judge Jerry Braswell to 28 to 34 months.
Wiggins had been charged with armed robbery, conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury and first-degree kidnapping.
The guilty plea resulted from a negotiated settlement between the District Attorney's Office and defense lawyer Carroll Turner of Mount Olive.
The defendant was accused of robbing a man on Sept. 8, 2005, on Randolph Street. The victim, Treaver Vontroy Newsome of Dudley, had given a man a ride from an Elm Street convenience store to Randolph Street, a police report said.
When Newsome stopped, a second man, identified as Wiggins, jumped in the back seat and struck the driver twice on the head with a handgun, the report said. Wiggins then demanded Newsome's property, grabbed a wallet with $120 and a cell phone and fled north in a car, the report said.
Police believe that the robbery was a set-up between Wiggins and the passenger who was never identified.
Wiggins, who also had lived in New York City, eluded authorities until he was arrested Sept. 30 in Greenville.
Car stolen
A blue, four-door 2003 Honda was stolen between May 3 and Thursday from Goldsboro Honda at 1309 W. Grantham St., Goldsboro police reported. The key may have been left in the car that was valued at $13,300.
