Children's festival to be held at Wayne library Saturday

The public is invited to a free children's festival this weekend at Wayne County Public Library.
As part of national public awareness campaign, funding was received through a grant from United Way of Wayne County and is geared to families and caregivers of young children from birth to age 5. "Born Learning" promotes the message that children are born learning and that parents can use everyday moments such as sorting laundry or grocery shopping as teachable moments. By starting early, children can receive tools they need to succeed when they enter school.
The children's festival will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Wayne County Public Library and Herman Park. Renowned storyteller Ron Jones of Durham will open the festivities with a storytelling session in the library auditorium at 10 a.m. The first 100 children at the storytelling session will receive a train whistle.
Children will then parade over to Herman Park for free train rides on the Kiwanis miniature train, children's activities, a petting zoo, face painting and moonwalk. Refreshments will also be available at no charge. After visiting agency booths, children may enter a drawing for mother's day gifts and a bicycle to be given away at the end of the event.
The partnership is taking an active role in the Born Learning campaign as a means to help parents and caregivers prepare children to succeed in school, said Don Magoon, executive director of the partnership. Educational materials and contact information will be distributed through physicians' offices, community agencies and other outlets. The partnership also plans to connect parents and caregivers with materials, resources and local programs through educational materials, movie theater, radio and transit ads, and a Born Learning website .
