Wayne County law authorities will emphasize the use of seat belts in pickup trucks next week during a high-visibility enforcement initiative called "Buckle Up in Your Truck."
The campaign will start Sunday and extend through May 21.
The goal is to save more lives by convincing more pickup drivers and their passengers to always buckle up, said Goldsboro police Maj. Mike Hopper.
Studies conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, indicate that occupants in pickup trucks consistently have lower safety-belt usage rates than those in cars, vans and sport utility vehicles.
There were 5,801 deaths of occupants in pickup trucks in 2004, including 1,782 in the Southeast.
The Governor's Highway Safety Commission is helping promote the campaign.
