Fires damage
garage, home
An unattached garage, a vacant mobile home and a workshop were damaged in recent fires, Wayne County fire officials said.
The garage and its contents, including specialized tools used to repair vehicles, were destroyed early Sunday at 1291 Old Harvey Sutton Road.
An electrical failure in an air compressor was believed to have started the blaze, Smith Chapel Fire Chief Charlie McClenny said.
"We're still looking into it, but it probably was electrical," he said.
Damage was estimated at $25,000 to the garage and $30,000 to the contents, owned by the residents, Ken and Carolyn Bowling.
The fire also damaged a 1984 Corvette under a lean-to shelter, McClenny said. The car, valued at $6,000, had about $2,500 in damages.
Fourteen Smith Chapel firefighters answered the 1:04 a.m. call with four trucks. The Grantham and Mount Olive departments assisted.
The fire that damaged a vacant single-wide home on Weston Circle was referred to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for a further investigation.
Mar Mac Fire Chief Bill Harrell said the home did not have power and the fire started at about 11:40 p.m. Saturday in one room. A quick response by Mar Mac, Thoroughfare and Arrington volunteers kept damage to the room.
"You don't get to save too many mobile homes," Harrell said.
Because there was no power, the chief said he thought the fire was suspicious. He said investigators collected samples for further analysis.
Damage was estimated at $5,000 to the home that was valued at about $15,000.
Harrell said the home could be repaired. In fact, he said, it had been sold only about two weeks earlier and the new, unidentified owners were setting it up to be rented.
A small fire on Monday damaged a workshop at 3205 Central Heights Road in Goldsboro. The resident in an upstairs apartment, Joe Barnes III, had put out the fire with an extinguisher.
Assistant Fire Chief Eric Lancaster said the cause of the fire could not be determined, and he asked the police to continue an investigation.
Damage was estimated at $300 to the building and $300 to contents. The building, owned by Billy Barnes, was valued at $45,000. Contents were valued at $10,000.
Fifteen firefighters answered the 12:47 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed about an hour and a half to investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
3 people charged
in Princeton raid
PRINCETON -- Three people from Selma have been charged by Princeton police with drug violations during a raid on a home in the 400 block of West Railroad Street. Drugs, alcohol and a handgun were seized.
Anthony Wayne Currie, 25, was charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was placed in the Johnston County Jail in Smithfield in lieu of a $16,000 secured bond.
Elizabeth Ann Parker, 40, was charged with three misdemeanor counts of possession of alcohol without a permit. Her secured bond was set at $1,000.
Regina Watson of Selma was charged in a citation with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and was released from custody.
Chief Eddie Lewis said Princeton police and Johnston County sheriff's deputies seized 90 cans of beer, liquor and wine, cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a handgun. Other property that Lewis said may have been stolen also was seized.
12 injured
in accidents
Twelve people were injured and damages were estimated at $54,450 in 11 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two passengers were injured in a three-car, rear-end collision at 9:20 a.m. Monday on East Ash Street near North Herman Street, Goldsboro police said. Carmela Dennis, 40, of North Carolina Street and Jamal Williams, 19, of Flamingo Circle, Dudley, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Their driver, Charles Edward Fox Jr., 19, of Fox Drive, Dudley, had stopped for traffic. Another driver, Evelyn G. Atchison, 73, of Fire Tower Road, LaGrange, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The other stopped driver was Needham Wiley Jr., 43, of Banks Avenue. Damages were set at $2,000.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-car crash at 4:30 p.m. at East Walnut Street and Andrews Avenue, police said. A northbound driver, Alicia Jeanette Thigpen, 23, of Nahunta Road, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation at a stop sign. The other driver, Jodie Demon Taylor, 21, of Twin Creeks Road, was going east.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 4:50 p.m. Monday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, at an exit ramp from Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. A driver merging from the ramp, Sara S. Herring, 49, of Old Grantham Road, was charged with an improper lane change after her car had collided with a westbound pickup truck that was driven by Benny F. Wiggs Jr., 32, of West Hill Street.
*Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $12,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 2:09 p.m. Sunday at N.C. 581 and Pikeville-Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. A southbound driver, Charles Frank Greene, 65, of Perkins Road, and his passengers, Barbara Greene, 59, Keisha Greene, 11, and Valare Greene, 15, all of Perkins Road, and Pearlie Newman, 79, of Hinson Street, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. A westbound driver, Steve G. Jones, 35, of Old Kenly Road, Pikeville, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 8:55 a.m. Sunday on Rosewood Road near Holland Hill Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Tamara Cheryl Barlotta-Wood, 20, of Rosewood Road was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the car that she was driving had run off the left side and struck a ditch and a tree. Damage was set at $6,000.
*A driver was injured and her car was demolished in a wreck at 10:40 a.m. Saturday on Rosewood Road near Glenn Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Luella Darlene Bozman, 45, of Rosewood Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Bozman was charged with driving left of center. Her car, valued at $2,500, ran off the left side and struck a street sign and a tree, the report said. Other damages were put at $450.
*Damages were estimated at $6,800 in a two-vehicle crash at 3:05 p.m. Saturday on Genoa Road near Potts Road, the Highway Patrol said. One southbound motorist, Wendy D. Martinez, 29, of Mobile Circle, Dudley, was charged with failure to reduce speed after her car had collided with a pickup truck that was driven by Donna H. Raynor, 52, of Vann Street.
*A moped operator was injured in a wreck at 7:25 p.m. Saturday on Spring Bank Road near Rifle Range Road and then charged with driving while impaired, the Highway Patrol said. Leady Eugene Gray Jr., 49, of Rabbit Run Road, was released after emergency-room treatment. The moped had run off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned. Damage was fixed at $100.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-car, hit-and-run collision at 4:10 p.m. Friday at N.C. 55 and Indian Springs Road, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver did not stop at a stop sign and fled after the car collided with a westbound auto that was driven by Elijah Lee Rouse, 22, of Kinston. The other car was registered to Beni Santizo of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, the report said.
*A driver was injured at 10:51 p.m. Thursday after fleeing from a marked Wayne County sheriff's car and wrecking his car on U.S. 13 near Durham Lake Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jeremy Romel Alston, 29, of Hereford Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged by troopers with reckless driving. The report said Alston had swerved around a slower car and lost control of his car and it ran off the right side of the road. Damage was put at $2,000.
*A southbound driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 5:54 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. Pamela Carol Ladd, 36, of Brandywine Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. A westbound motorist, Michael Lee Deutsch, 20, of Gurley Dairy Road, Pikeville, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. Damages were set at $2,600.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $1,240 worth of property was stolen between Sunday night and Monday from several unlocked vehicles in the 1100 block of Daw Pate Road, deputies said. The property included three radar detectors, a phone, tools, sunglasses, two portable compact disc players, compact discs, shirts and cologne. The victims were the residents, Diane L. Mullins, William Mullins and Rachel Mullins, and Glen Lancaster, Ricky Lawhorn and Jimmy Combs, all of Goldsboro.
*Compact discs, a camcorder, a DVD player, an Ipod, a television and video-game equipment were stolen Monday from an apartment in the 200 block of Sheridan Forest Road, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door, a window and a cable. The resident, Michael Lee Jones, estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,900 and damages at $760.
*A combination compact disc and tape player, four speakers, a television and two DVD players were stolen between Sunday and Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Hideaway Circle, deputies said. The resident, Regina King, estimated the stolen property's value at $550 and damage at $180.
*A combination compact disc player and stereo was stolen between Saturday and Monday after a car window was shattered at Deacon Jones Kia at 2077 U.S. 70 West, deputies said. The player was valued at $250. Damage was set at $200.
*A compact disc player and radio and a navigation system were stolen between Friday and Monday from a Mercedes at Jackie's Used Cars at 2091 U.S. 70 West, deputies said. It was valued at $1,000. A taillight, valued at $100, was taken from a Chevrolet Silverado.
*A white 1996 Ford van was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the 300 block of East Spring Street in Seven Springs, deputies said. The van, owned by the resident, Nelson Mauricio Ortiz, was valued at $4,000.
Vehicle break-ins
Three vehicles were broken into between Friday and Monday at Goldsboro Honda at 1309 W. Grantham St., and stereo equipment was stolen, Goldsboro police reported.
The thief had smashed windows in all three vehicles to get inside. Damages were set at $300.
Stereo equipment, valued at $900, was stolen from a Ford Explorer. A radio was stolen a second vehicle, and a radio and the dash were taken from the third. The values were not immediately known.
