Memorial will honor 9 officers

The annual Wayne County Law Officer's Memorial service will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Wayne Community College to honor nine officers who were killed in the line of duty.
The Sheriff's Office, Goldsboro, Fremont and Mount Olive police departments and the Highway Patrol are expected to participate in the ceremony.
The fallen officers included Sheriff's Capt. Jerry K. Best and Sheriff John Coor Pender; Goldsboro police Lt. C. Frank Faircloth and Officers Mahlon M. Parks, Walter J. Rouse and Herbert C. Wiegand; Highway Patrol Troopers Michael Martin and I.T. Moore, and Fremont Police Chief Walter Braswell.
Others listed on the memorial are fire and rescue workers who died while performing their duty: Thoroughfare Fire Chief H. Sidney Jones, Arrington Fire Lt. Robby Blizzard and rescue personnel Kenneth Davis and James Hickman.
J. Reid Lee, an off-duty Wayne Memorial Hospital police officer, was killed in a traffic accident in 2005.
