Ex-Aycock teacher sentenced in sex case

A female teacher at Charles B. Aycock High School has been ordered to give up her teaching certificate after she pleaded guilty to having sex with an 18-year-old male student.
Lauri Spurlock, 36, of Devonshire Drive also received a three- to four-month suspended prison sentence, was placed on supervised probation for 12 months and fined $500 and court costs.
Judge Jerry Braswell of Goldsboro also ordered Ms. Spurlock to complete 200 hours of community service within six months and pay the $200 community service fee.
Ms. Spurlock was charged in February by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with two felony counts of a sex offense with a student. She pleaded guilty in Wayne County Superior Court to two felony counts of sexual activity by a teacher with a student. The charges were consolidated into one sentence.
When she pays all of the money and finishes the community service, Braswell said he would consider transferring her to unsupervised probation.
The case unfolded earlier this year when Sheriff Carey Winders said he was asked by the county Board of Education to investigate an incident between a teacher and a student.
Detective Sgts. Tammy Odom and Dean Roscoe began the investigation.
The initial report indicated that a sexual relationship had occurred between a female teacher and a male student between mid-September 2005, and Jan. 31. Winders said the crimes did not occur on school property.
Assistant District Attorney Jan Kroboth prosecuted the case. Ms. Spurlock was represented by lawyer James Copeland of Goldsboro.
