Mount Olive man
indicted in scam
A Mount Olive resident who is a Mexican national has been indicted in federal district court in Raleigh on charges involving fraudulent passports.
Leocadio Gallardo Velasco, 30, was indicted for making false statements and submitting false documents, including a fake birth certificate as proof of American citizenship, in his passport application.
Four other men living in North Carolina also were indicted in the case that was investigated by the Diplomatic Security Service. Two were from the African nation of Gambia, another was a Mexican national and the other was a North Carolinian.
Fire investigated
The cause of today's predawn fire that destroyed a double-wide mobile home in the 100 block of Gary Lane was being investigated by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
New Hope Fire Chief Bud Gray said the vacant, uninsured home was engulfed in flames when firefighters answered the 1:59 a.m. call.
New Hope firefighters were assisted by Pinewood and Elroy volunteers.
The home, valued at $20,000, was owned by Gary McNeil.
4 hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $46,900 in eight recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 4:23 p.m. Wednesday at East Ash and North Jackson streets, Goldsboro police said. Helen H. Hooks, 71, of Edgerton Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Joshua Steven Woodard, 20, of Sims, was charged with a stoplight violation. Damages were set at $4,500.
*Damages were estimated at $12,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 7:55 p.m. Monday at North Carolina and West Holly streets, police said. Jeffrey Allen Hadley, 47, of Brighton, Mich., was charged with a safe-movement violation at a stop sign.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 3:30 a.m. Sunday on N.C. 111 near Ditchbank Road, the Highway Patrol said. Saira Flores, 16, of Houston, Texas, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the car had run off the right side in a curve and struck a sign, a bank and a power pole. The car, valued at $3,000, was demolished. Other damages were set at $1,800. The passengers, Mary Martinez, 22, and Feliciana Eduardo, 25, both of Hopewell, Lane, Mount Olive, also suffered minor injuries
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 11:30 p.m. Saturday at Old Mount Olive and Pecan roads, the Highway Patrol said. Derick Leonard Bryant, 18, of Audubon Lane was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed. Damage was set at $3,000.
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-car collision at 10 p.m. Friday on N.C. 581 near Pecan Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ayanna Renee Bynum, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va., was charged with improper passing.
*Damages were estimated at $8,500 in a two-car, rear-end crash at 3:15 p.m. April 27 at U.S. 70 and Claridge Nursery Road, the Highway Patrol said. An eastbound motorist, Leah Elizabeth Bowler, 17, of Cessna Lane, Princeton, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other driver was Jason Edward Kennedy, 23, of Leaning Post Lane, LaGrange.
*Damages were set at $5,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:25 a.m. April 27 at U.S. 13 and U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. A southbound driver, Samantha Jean Haverty, 18, of Old Grantham Road, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said Ms. Haverty lost control of the car that she was driving and it ran off the right side, came back on the road, spun around, crossed the center line, struck a northbound pickup truck and slid off the road into a ditch. The other driver was Douglas Wayne Smith, 37, of North Beston Road, LaGrange.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 12:01 a.m. April 26 on Bakers Chapel Road near Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. Phylis Faulk, 42, of Eatmon Place, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with reckless driving after the car had run off the left side and struck a mailbox and a ditch. Damage was set at $5,000 to the car and $100 to the mailbox.
Fraud
A woman was notified that she had won $1 million and then had to send in $1,700 to claim her prize, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Teresa Anne Sauls of Fremont told deputies that she had sent the money in April to someone in Nebraska and said she never got her big prize.
Thefts reported
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Gold necklaces, video-game equipment, two shotguns and an electric welder were stolen Wednesday from a home in the 100 block of Autumn Winds Drive, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. One resident, Ashley Martin, put a $300 value on the necklaces and estimated the damage at $350. The other resident, Robert Chad Brogden, put a $1,450 value on the other stolen property.
*A generator and an air compressor have been stolen from under a shed in the 100 block of Britt Road, deputies said. The resident, David Kevin Pennington, put a $1,500 value on the property.
*A metal breaker was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a workshop in the 100 block of Jones-Joyner Lane, deputies said. The owner, James Ervin Jones, said it was worth $1,000.
Vehicles stolen
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Two Honda motorcycles were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from the 100 block of Fallin Boulevard, police said. The bikes, owned by the residents, George Taylor and William Simmons, were valued at $12,000.
*A red, two-door 2000 Oldsmobile Alero was stolen Wednesday from along U.S. 70 East, police said. The owner, Wanda Coley of Goldsboro, said the disabled car was worth $3,000.
