Man, intruders
exchange shots
A resident in eastern Wayne County saw two men enter his home Tuesday and then exchanged gunfire with the intruders, who had stolen six firearms, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
Neither the resident, John Franklin Bartlett, nor the intruders were injured, the report said.
Bartlett told deputies that he was putting gas in his tractor in the backyard at about 10:15 a.m. and then walked back to his house in the 700 block of South Beston Road.
The report said Bartlett saw a silver or light blue, two-door car in his driveway with a white man inside. Bartlett then looked in his house and saw another white man inside.
The driver stuck a handgun out of the car and opened fire at Bartlett, the report said. The resident then returned fire with a handgun.
The second suspect fled from the house, lost his shoes and jumped in the car, the report said. The car sped north on South Beston Road.
Bartlett reported that the suspect had stolen his .30 caliber carbine, a .38 handgun and a .380 handgun that were valued at $1,550.
A second resident, George Franklin Bartlett, reported the theft of a semi-automatic handgun, a rifle with a scope and a muzzle-loading rifle that were valued at $1,350.
Damage from gunshots to the garage door and side door was estimated at $1,000.
Man wounded
A Goldsboro man was wounded Tuesday while visiting in an apartment in the 100 block of DuPont Circle, Goldsboro police reported.
Lendell Hines, 55, of West Oak Street was struck in the side by a blast from a shotgun at about 6:25 p.m. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. The suspect was described as being black, about 65 years old, 5-feet-3 and 120 pounds with a medium build, short gray hair and brown eyes.
Robbery charge
A 30-year-old Clayton man was arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police and charged with armed robbery and second-degree kidnapping.
Justin Radcliff was accused of the April 24 holdup of The Pantry convenience store on Wayne Memorial Drive for $64, investigators said. Radcliff was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $150,000 bond.
Radcliff, who has an artificial leg, tried to flee after the holdup and fell, breaking his other leg. He had been hospitalized since he was arrested within minutes of the robbery.
Kellee Bavo, 21, of Corporate Drive, was arrested at the same time and charged with aiding an armed robber and carrying a concealed weapon. She was jailed under a $75,000 bond.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Jewelry, about $250 and a camcorder were stolen Tuesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 300 block of Oriole Drive. Lorie Mitchell estimated the value of the property at $2,350 and set damage at $40.
*Jewelry and other property were stolen from a home in the 100 block of William Court, deputies said. The resident, Willie Kay Thompson, put a $2,000 value on the watch and a $69 value on the other items.
*A blue, four-door 1989 Cadillac DeVille was stolen Tuesday from a repair shop in the 2500 block of New Hope Road. Billy Ray Poston Jr. valued the car at $4,000.
*The interior, a refrigerator and a kitchen were damaged between April 1 and Tuesday in a home in the 100 block of Red Fox Trail. Damage at John Leland Gurley's home was estimated at $4,325.
Drug charge
A 50-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Tuesday night by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense in the 500 block of South Slocumb Street. Ronny Lee Coley of South Slocumb Street was charged with possession of cocaine. He was released from custody on a $3,000 unsecured bond.
