MOC students honored at leadership conference

MOUNT OLIVE -- Five Mount Olive College students recently received awards at the State Leadership Conference Competition of the North Carolina State Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda.
First and second place winners will represent the State Phi Beta Lambda Chapter at the National Leadership Conference in Tennessee this June.
Kelly Ann Hobbs of Clinton placed first in Financial Concepts and second in Accounting for Professionals. Michele Knotts of Goldsboro placed first in Hospitality Management and fifth place in Marketing Concepts. Mari Hatcher of Albertson placed fourth in Accounting Principles and third in Statistical Analysis. Patrick Pittman of Pine Level placed second in Statistical Analysis and eighth in Accounting Principles. Kate Somek of Sudbury, Ontario placed seventh in Human Resource Management and International Business.
Hobbs, a senior business management major, is the daughter of Kaye Maynor and the late Gary Hobbs. She is a member of Phi Beta Lambda and a Handy Mart Scholarship recipient.
Knotts, a senior business management major and English minor, is the daughter of Robert E. Cann and Andrea R. Cann. She serves as vice president and secretary of the MOC chapter of PBL.
Hatcher, an accounting major, is the daughter of Natalie Hatcher. She serves as treasurer of the MOC chapter of Phi Beta Lambda. Hatcher was recently named a 2006-2007 Handy Mart Business Scholar, a scholarship valued at $8,000 a year.
Pittman, a sophomore business management major, is the son of Ann and Phil Pittman. He was recently named a 2006-2007 Handy Mart Business Scholar, a scholarship that is valued at $8,000 per year.
Somek, a junior business management and human resource management double major, is the daughter of Robert Somek and Amira Marchese. She serves as the president of the MOC chapter of Phi Beta Lambda.
"The business classes that I have taken in the past really helped prepare me for the competitions," Somek said.
Hobbs, Knotts, and Pittman will represent Mount Olive College at the national competition in Tennessee in June.
In addition to the five award winners, Kallen King of Faison was elected and installed as the North Carolina PBL Professional Division Secretary-Treasurer. King is a senior business management major and has attended and participated in state and national PBL competitions throughout the state and in Florida.
The Mount Olive College PBL was also one of only a handful of colleges to receive the prestigious Terry Lowrance Leadership Award at the State leadership Conference. MOC Professors Henry Day and Sonya McCoy were event administrators.
