Driver keeps date in court

A Guatemalan national who pleaded guilty to driving into two Greenwood Middle School students in November as they walked to school made an appearance in Wayne County Superior Court today.
Wilder Fidelmar Mejia Alvarado of Bennett's Bridge Road, Mount Olive, was to appear before Judge Jerry Braswell to have the terms of his probation amended.
Mejia Alvarado, 24, pleaded guilty last month to two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Traffic charges, including running a red light, were dropped in exchange for the felony plea.
He spent 136 days in the Wayne County Jail before being sentenced to 150 days by Braswell. After being released, Mejia Alvarado was placed under electronic house arrest.
Mejia Alvarado had given police officers at the scene of the accident a different name. Authorities have said he has used several aliases in the past.
Federal immigration authorities met with Mejia Alvarado before he was released to discuss his status as an illegal alien in the United States.
He is expected to report to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, but local officials have said they do not know the date.
