Council will eye plan for facade

The Paramount Theater facade is among the issues Goldsboro City Council will take up Monday during its first meeting of May in council chambers at City Hall.
The majority of the meeting will focus on rezoning issues and site and landscape plan presentations. Other issues slated for discussion include potential condemnation of three dilapidated dwellings and the need to stabilize the front wall of the Paramount Theater.
Goldsboro's chief building inspector Ed Cianfarra is expected to recommend condemnation for 110 N. Slocumb St., 114 N. Slocumb St. and 412 E. Walnut St.
Discussions regarding re-enforcement of the Paramount Theater facade are likely to focus on money the city could acquire for taking the action.
Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. executive director Julie Thompson has said that if council votes to spend $50,000 to $75,000 to stabilize the structure, Goldsboro would be eligible for nearly $1 million in tax credits toward rebuilding the historic theater.
Despite recent controversy stemmed from statements made by Paramount Reconstruction Committee chairman Chuck Allen earlier this month that the project was no longer a priority for the council, Mayor Al King said he is confident the theater will be rebuilt. If so, the tax credits would be well worth the investment, he said.
Other business will include a public hearing on the 2006-07 Annual Action Plan for the Community Development Block Grant and HOME programs and a public comment period.
