Man is charged
in home thefts
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has cleared two residential larceny cases that involved almost $12,000 in stolen property with the arrest of a 27-year-old man from Dudley.
Jason Lawrence Taylor of Eagles Nest Road was charged with two felony counts of larceny and one felony count of possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
The cases unfolded when a Kelly Drive resident reported the theft of about $5,800 worth of property on Feb. 22. When Taylor was picked up, he had the property, and he was arrested and charged for the crime. He posted bond the same day and was released from custody.
A week later, a Providence Church Road resident reported the theft of a diamond ring, valued at $6,000. Both crimes occurred while work was being done on the homes, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said.
After an investigation, Taylor was arrested again and charged with the theft. The ring was recovered at a pawn shop in Hope Mills and returned to the owner. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour assisted in the case.
Woman wounded
MOUNT OLIVE -- A 22-year-old woman was wounded before dawn today at her home in the 600 block of South Center Street.
Vivian Denise Miles was taken by a private vehicle to the Mount Olive Rescue Squad building and then rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was stabilized. She was transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where her condition was not immediately available.
Police Lt. Tommy Brown said no arrests have been made. He said police are investigating the shooting as either an assault or as a self-inflicted wound. A weapon was recovered, he said.
Sex charge
A 40-year-old man has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with failure to register as a sex offender.
Henry Graham Meeks Jr. was registered and living at a Wayne County address, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. But he allegedly did not verify his address as required by state law and then moved. He was arrested in Cumberland County. Meeks was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
4 hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $52,000 in six recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and charged after a one-vehicle wreck at 1:18 a.m. today on North William Street near 11th Street, Goldsboro police said. Vanico Dicole Perkins, 31, of Central Heights Road was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The report said the sport utility vehicle had run off the right side and struck a power pole and the driver had fled. Perkins was arrested a block away. He was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired, hit and run and opened container and seat-belt violations. His secured bond was set at $6,000. Damage was set at $6,000 to the SUV and $1,000 to the pole.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $12,000 in a three-vehicle, hit-and-run collision at 10:45 p.m. Thursday on Olivia Lane near Poplar Street, Goldsboro police said. Yuante DuBois Smith of Creech Street was released after emergency-room treatment. The report said Smith was starting a left turn as a following vehicle passed him. The other driver fled, and the car, registered to Christopher Ryan Henderson of Grandy, had been reported stolen, the report said. The impact of the collision sent the car that Smith was driving into a parked car that was registered to Willie Lee Thomas of Olivia Lane. The parked car then struck the side of a Goldsboro Housing Authority unit. Damage to the building was set at $1,500.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle, rear-end collision at 4:40 p.m. Thursday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Lockhaven Drive, police said. One driver, Racquel L. White, 18, of Porter Street was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other driver was listed as Christiana Dawn Sellers, 24, of Kinston.
*A driver was injured and damages were put at $12,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 12:45 p.m. Thursday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Hare Road, the Highway Patrol said. Corey Lamont Terry, 28, of Apple Tree Creek Road, Stantonsburg, was listed today in good condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with driving left of center. The report said his southbound car had rounded a curve, skidded out of control across the center line and struck a northbound pickup truck. The other driver was William-Anto Cardona Vasquez, 38, of Third Street, Snow Hill.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 4:02 p.m. Thursday on East Ash Street near North Slocumb Street, police said. A westbound motorist, James Y. Foster Jr., 31, of Myers Avenue, was charged with an improper lane change and driving while his license was revoked. The report said Foster had tried to turn right from the left lane and his car had collided with a pickup truck that was driven by Charles George Dietzman, 56, of Patricia Court.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 2:38 p.m. Monday on Wayne Memorial Drive near True Vine Road, the Highway Patrol said. Paula B. Kearney, 48, of West Lockhaven Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with failure to maintain lane control after her car had run off the right side, then crossed back off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The car, valued at $5,000, was demolished.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A metal brake, a weed trimmer and a push mower were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday after a lock was cut on a barn in the 1900 block of Sleepy Creek Road, deputies said. The resident, A.S. Lanier, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,200 and damage at $20.
*A DVD player, a video cassette recorder and a safe deposit box were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 300 block of Janice Drive, deputies said. The resident, S.D. Jones, estimated the stolen property's value at $400 and damage at $100.
*A DVD player, prescription medicine and a checkbook were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 1000 block of Outlaw Road, deputies said. The resident, R.L. Rich, estimated the stolen property's value at $225 and damage at $100.
*A champagne 1998 Chevrolet 1500 truck was stolen between April 19 and Thursday from the 100 block of Kelway Drive, deputies said. The owner and resident, Randy Todd Bill, put a $4,500 value on it.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A music compact disc and about $6 were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday after a car window was smashed in the 1900 block of Palm Street, police said. The resident and owner, Ronald Dwayne Benfield, said the CD was valued at $10. Damage was set at $100.
*A black, eight-foot-by-16-foot trailer was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from Premier Carpets at 1104 S. George St., police said. The trailer was valued at $1,500.
*A white gold diamond bracelet and a watch were stolen between Tuesday and Thursday from a home in the 800 block of North Madison Avenue, police said. The resident, Sakima Ethridge, said the jewelry was worth $1,650.
Embezzlement
A 31-year-old woman has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony embezzlement.
Tasha Benoit Hill of N.C. 111 South, Seven Springs, was accused of embezzling $521.42 in money and merchandise while working at the Kangaroo convenience store on U.S. 70 West, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Ms. Hill was released from custody on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
Missing
A 36-year-old man was reported missing Thursday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Kenny Ray Hood, who did not have a home address, was described as white, 5-feet-10 and 220 pounds with brown hair, green eyes and tattoos on both arms. He was seen last on Monday and may be driving a black 1976 Ford truck. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
