Kitchen fire
A kitchen fire on Thursday at a vacant rental home at 1206 Edgerton St. caused about $15,300 in damages, the Goldsboro Fire Department reported.
Assistant Fire Chief Eric Lancaster said the last occupant had left a week ago but the power was still on and someone had left a pot cooking on the stove.
Lancaster said that when 12 firefighters answered the 9:15 p.m. call, they discovered light smoke coming from the home. Once inside, they found that the fire had almost burned itself out, except around the cabinets. The remaining fire was put out quickly.
Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the home that was owned by Elva Monroe of Goldsboro and valued at $50,000. About $300 worth of contents also was damaged. The contents were valued at $600.
Three engines, a ladder truck and a command car responded. They arrived within five minutes of the alarm, controlled the fire in 28 minutes and remained another hour and a half to search the home and investigate the fire cause.
A further investigation of the fire was referred to police.
Meth tank found
A tank that may have been used in a clandestine methamphetamine production lab was found Wednesday by prison inmates cleaning the sides of Genoa Road, authorities said.
A certified clandestine lab cleanup crew from South Carolina was called and recovered the tank that had a rubber hose attached. The cylinder had ruptured and had contained anhydrous ammonia, an item used in the production of methamphetamine, officers said.
Sheriff Carey Winders warned Wayne County residents to be cautious of any suspicious items that they may discover. He said residents should not handle the items and should report them immediately to law enforcement.
"Items used in clandestine lab operations are very dangerous or toxic," the sheriff said.
A state Corrections Department employee who was supervising a roadside cleanup crew reported that an inmate had discovered the tank in a ditch. The inmate had found the item in a garbage bag and tried to pull it out with a rake. The bag tore and exposed the tank.
Deputy sheriffs were summoned and secured the area. Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad officers arrived and determined that the item could be part of a meth operation.
Man robbed
A 29-year-old man from Dudley said he was robbed before dawn today by seven to 10 armed black men in the 1200 block of North Center Street, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Jeremy Romel Alston of Hereford Drive reported that the suspects had come out from behind bushes, held him at gunpoint, assaulted him and stole property from his car. The suspects fled east on Brogden Street.
Alston said his wallet with credit cards, a car stereo, a DVD player, three videotapes, a radio, a leather briefcase, a shirt, a vest and other property were stolen. The property was valued at $876.
The suspects were described as being 18 to 22 years old, and they wore jeans, white or black T-shirts and bandanas.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $33,200 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and both vehicles were demolished in a collision at 9:13 a.m. Thursday at Wayne Memorial Drive and 11th Street, Goldsboro police said. Zondra Denise Rogers, 35, of Wilson was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. She was charged with a safe-movement violation, driving while her license was revoked and not having liability insurance. The other driver was identified as James Carlton Arrington, 51, of Friendswood Drive. The vehicles were valued at $27,000.
*A driver from Mount Olive was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 8:56 p.m. Thursday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Central Heights Road, Goldsboro police said. Taquonna Shawanda Loftin, 22, of East Maple Street was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Johnny Lester Bedford, 41, of Progressive Church Road, Princeton, was charged with an improper left turn. Damages were set at $4,200. The report said Bedford had tried to make a U-turn around a median barrier.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday on Rollingwood Drive near Rollingwood Court, the Highway Patrol said. Andre Deon McCullen, 23, of Brentwood Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the car had run off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The car, valued at $2,000, was demolished.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A blue and white 1997 Yamaha dirt bike, a 40-inch television and a DVD player were stolen Thursday after a door glass was broken at a home in the 1100 block of Thunder Swamp Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Corey Pearsall, estimated the value of his property at $3,362 and damage at $25.
*A man's gold watch and two man's diamond rings were stolen between April 14 and Thursday from a home in the 100 block of Cheryl Drive, deputies said. The resident, Derrie Lyneal Dove, put a $1,300 value on his property. No sign of forced entry was listed.
*A computer and a keyboard, a digital camera and a 36-inch television were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Leaning Post Lane, deputies said. The resident, Jason Kennedy, estimated the stolen property's value at $2,600 and damage at $200.
*About $1,000 was stolen Thursday after a window was smashed at a home in the 400 block of Little Dove Road, deputies said. The resident, Raul Robles Garcia, estimated damage at $100.
*Five pairs of jeans and $50 were stolen Thursday after a door was forced open at an apartment in the 2500 block of East Elm Street, Goldsboro police said. The resident, Marquel Deon Jones, put a $375 value on the jeans.
Larceny charge
Goldsboro police solved a "snatch-and-grab" jewelry larceny Thursday with the arrest of James Carter Crawford, 32, of Castlegate Road, LaGrange.
Crawford was accused of grabbing a piece of jewelry April 4 at J.C. Penneys in Berkeley Mall and fleeing, Investigator Dwayne Dean said. Crawford was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 secured bond. Investigator Mike Moore and Housing Officer Raymond Johnson assisted in the arrest.
Husband charged
A 30-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with the second-degree rape.
Otoniel Aguilon Marroquin of North William Street surrendered four days after the alleged crime was committed. Marroquin, who denied the charge, was released from custody after posting a $15,000 secured bond.
