Fremont board takes new look at highway plans

FREMONT -- The Fremont town board saw its 7-year-old thoroughfare plan -- perhaps for the first time -- during Tuesday night's monthly meeting in Town Hall.
Town Administrator Kerry McDuffie said he wanted to bring the state Department of Transportation plan to the board's attention. He explained that these plans are updated every 25 or 30 years.
McDuffie said if the board adopts the plan, then the town might have a better chance at getting state funding for it.
Some of the six aldermen shared a magnifying glass to look at the proposed street plan that McDuffie said would be available for public inspection in Town Hall.
The plan includes a near-loop of the town. The southern half would be a N.C. 222 bypass that would use some existing streets, including Ballance Road on the east side and Brickyard Road on the west side. It would end just east of the U.S. 117 and N.C. 222 interchange.
The northern half would use Evans Farm and Stuckey roads but would be mostly a new highway.
The plan also calls for a continuation of Branch Street to Norwayne School Road.
Alderman Billy Harvey suggested that the board might need a work session to study the plan because "the dynamics have changed since 1998."
In other business, the board:
*Scheduled a sale of surplus property, including an acre of land, a police car, a fire truck and office equipment at 9 a.m. June 3.
*Approved a request from the NOVA group home at 3801 U.S. 117 North to be hooked onto the force main.
*Approved budget amendments for police and fire department grants for equipment and was asked for input for the 2006-07 budget.
*Renamed Short Street as Thomas L. Jones Street.
*Learned that numerous recycling violations had been found.
