A Guatemalan national who pleaded guilty to driving into two Greenwood Middle School students has been released from jail but is under electronic house arrest, authorities said today.

Wilder Fildemar Mejia Alvarado was released from the Wayne County Jail on Monday. He had served 150 days.

Mejia Alvarado pleaded guilty earlier this month to assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the Nov. 18 accident that left two 13-year-old boys severely injured.

Authorities said today that he remains under probation in Duplin County, where he lives.

Mejia Alvarado must wear an electronic ankle bracelet so that authorities can track him, said probation officers. He is scheduled to return to Wayne County Superior Court on May 1 for another hearing before Judge Jerry Braswell.

Federal immigration authorities met with Mejia Alvarado on Friday to discuss his status. He is expected to report to the Immigration and Naturalization Service but local officials said they did not know the date.
