Hair dryer blamed
for starting a fire
A hair dryer was blamed for starting a fire that caused about $30,000 to a home in western Wayne County, a fire official said Monday.
The hair dryer had been turned on Friday and left on the front porch at 4996 U.S. 13 South, Jordans Chapel Fire Chief Steve Johnson said.
"The fire started on the front porch and climbed into the attic," the chief said.
Fire and smoke were showing when about 12 Jordans Chapel firefighters answered the 1 p.m. call with mutual aid from Grantham and Smith Chapel. The fire had broken through the roof, Johnson said, but the firefighters contained it before the entire house could be damaged.
The one-floor, wood-frame house is owned by Albert Denning. Johnson said the home and contents were worth about $70,000.
A house fire on Saturday at 414 S. Goldsboro St. in Fremont was put out by the residents before it could spread from the kitchen, Assistant Fremont Fire Chief Danny Tillman said Monday. Unattended cooking was blamed.
The fire spread from the stove to curtains and then went up a wall, Tillman said. Damage was estimated at $1,000. The resident's identity was not immediately available.
2 hurt in wreck
Two people were injured and the car in which they were riding was demolished in a wreck Sunday on N.C. 55, about seven-tenths of a mile west of Grantham School Road, the Highway Patrol said.
The driver, William Field Burch, 20, of Newton Grove, and a passenger, Candace McConnell, 23, of Newton Grove, were rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital. Burch was stabilized and transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was listed today in fair condition, a spokeswoman said. Ms. McConnell was listed today in good condition, a Wayne Memorial spokeswoman said.
The report said the westbound car had run off the right side at 1:18 a.m., struck a ditch, overturned several times in a field and then struck another ditch. No charges have been filed, but the investigation is incomplete.
The car, registered to Cecil's Exxon of Newton Grove, was valued at $9,000.
In other accidents:
*A pedestrian crossing Patetown Road was struck by a pickup truck and injured at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Goldsboro police said. Alex William Josefsberg, 55, of Stuart, Fla., was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The driver, Michael Lynn Rhodes, 30, of Brandy Drive, Dudley, was not charged. The report said Rhodes was making a left turn from the southbound lane of North William Street with the green light and the pedestrian crossed in front of him. The truck was not damaged.
*A motorist was charged with reckless driving after his southbound car swerved to miss a northbound, oncoming vehicle and struck a bridge railing in the northbound lanes of U.S. 117, north of Old Mount Olive Road, the Highway Patrol said. Luis Delacruz Lopez, 24, of Hope Mills was not injured, but his car had about $4,000 in damages.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $2,225 worth of jewelry was stolen between Dec. 25 and Monday from a home in the 1600 block of Old Grantham Road, deputies said. The resident, Charlene A. Allen, reported the theft of a diamond engagement ring, five other rings, three pairs of earrings, nine necklaces and a sleeping bag.
*Two weed trimmers, a backpack leaf blower and a gas can were stolen Monday from a trailer in the 300 block of U.S. 13 South, deputies said. The owner, James Edward Smith of Clinton, put a $1,074 value on his property.
*Three window air conditioners and a two 100-amp breakers were stolen between March 27 and Monday from a rental home in the 1200 block of Camp Jubilee Road, deputies said. The owner, Donald Brinson of Goldsboro, said his property was worth $695. The thief also inflicted about $250 in damages to a window and an electric panel box.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Video games and other equipment, 15 DVDs, $45 and a checkbook were stolen Monday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 100 block of Oakwood Street, police said. The resident, Brian Tyron Badger, estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,045 and damage at $50.
*About 50 DVDs and a DVD player were stolen between April 4 and Monday after a window was broken at an apartment in the 500 block of Hillcrest Drive, police said. The resident, Willie Godwin, estimated the stolen property's value at $680 and damage at $45.
*Five necklaces, a pair of boots, a purse and an unknown amount of money were stolen Monday after a window was shattered at an apartment in the 200 block of West Lockhaven Drive, police said. The resident, T.L. Smith, put a $980 value on the stolen property, in addition to the cash.
*About $30 was stolen before dawn today after a car window was smashed in a nightclub parking lot at 2106 U.S. 117 South, police said. The owner, Dommanik Vanyale Coley of Goldsboro, estimated damage at $70.
*Three compact discs were stolen Monday after a window was damaged in a truck in the 100 block of North Daisy Street, police said. The CDs were valued at $45. Damage was set at $100 to the truck, registered to Lester Coggins Trucking Inc. of Okahunoka, Fla.
Teen charged
A 13-year-old student at Southern Academy in Mount Olive has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged in a juvenile petition with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
As a sheriff's deputy and a school official approached the boy, he dropped an object to the ground. The deputy then smelled a strong odor of marijuana on the boy, the report said. Marijuana and a pack of rolling papers were found on him, and a marijuana cigarette was found on the ground, the report said.
Missing
Two teenagers have been reported missing by relatives in separate disappearances to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
*Chad Rubein Nord, 17 of 103 Country Run Lane was described as white, 6-feet-3 and 200 pounds with short blond hair, sideburns, a short, thin goatee and blue eyes. When Nord was seen last at about 7 a.m. April 5, he was wearing a T-shirt and blue jeans.
*Belinda Mae Crews, 15, of 3343 Arrington Bridge Road, Dudley, was described as white, 5-feet-3 and 120 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. When she was seen last at 4:40 p.m. Sunday, she was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, a black ballcap and white tennis shoes.
