Students, seniors 'grow together'

MOUNTOLIVE-- Third-grade students from Carver Elementary School in Mount Olive helped lift the spirits of residents at Sunbridge Rehabilitation and Care Home recently, while learning something about life themselves.
A community service grant obtained by Carver teachers gave the students the opportunity to visit the facility and spend time with the residents there on March 23. The theme of the project, "Growing Together: Young and Old," gave the students a chance to incorporate several courses of study in science, language and the theater into their visit, while making the day brighter for the seniors as well.
Both young and old enjoyed the experience.
Students were divided into four groups. One, led by Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Sykes, put on a puppet show for residents. Another, led by Mrs. Boyette, met with residents in their rooms and read to them. A third group, led by Mrs. Sumner, Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Bennett, joined residents in making spring-themed crafts. And a fourth group, led by Mrs. Ivey-Gregory and Mrs. Paige, planted flowers and bushes in the facility's gazebo garden for the residents' enjoyment.
At the end of the visit, the students gathered in the main dining room to sing and dance for the residents.
