Man hurt in wreck,
then home burns
A man was injured Thursday in a traffic collision and later that night his double-wide mobile home at 305 Becton Circle was damaged heavily in a fire.
"Thursday was not a good day for him," Oakland Fire Chief Jack Howell said of the resident, Horace Mills.
The wreck occurred at Rosewood and Charlie Braswell roads, Howell said.
When Oakland, Rosewood and Little River volunteers responded to the 8:30 p.m. call, they found heavy smoke showing.
Howell attributed the fire to an electrical short in a back bedroom, either from a small refrigerator or an electric candle.
The home and contents were valued at $65,000, and damages were estimated at $20,000, Howell said.
Polly Watson, Nahunta and Fremont volunteers went to a structure fire on a path off Memorial Hospital Church Road. No other information was available.
Pair sentenced
for armed holdups
Two young Goldsboro men have been sentenced to about four to six years in prison after pleading guilty to the armed robbery of restaurant delivery men last year.
Derek Andre Kornegay, 19, of South Herman Street and Julian Devon Sauls, 20, of Hugh Street were sentenced by Wayne County Superior Court Judge Jerry Braswell to 51 to 71 months.
Kornegay and Sauls pleaded guilty to robbing Daniel Newton, who was delivering an order for Pizza Hut on July 14 and then robbing Michael McCrae, who was delivering an order for Pizza Hut on July 29. Kornegay and Sauls also pleaded guilty to robbing Futt Suan Wong, who was delivering an order for a Chinese restaurant on July 31 to a house on Evergreen Avenue.
A third suspect, Gilbert McNeil III, 20, of Olivia Lane, has been indicted but he has not tried for the July 14 and July 29 robberies.
Break-in charges
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man and charged hin in several residential break-ins on Landfill Road. Edward Glyn Long, 25, of Odom Mill Road, Mount Olive, was charged with two felony counts of breaking and entering and larceny and two misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest. Long also was held on two outstanding arrest orders for failure to appear in court. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $90,000 secured bond.
Long was arrested after authorities were notified about a break-in. The property was recovered at a pawn shop in Mount Olive.
Additional charges are expected to be sought through grand jury indictments.
Long was sentenced in 2004 to eight to 10 months in prison on a charge of possession of stolen goods. After his release, he was arrested, convicted and sentenced again in 2005 to six to eight months for possession of a firearm by a felon. He was released from custody on Jan. 7.
Two charges
A 30-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested before dawn today and charged with the armed robbery and burglary of a motel guest.
Leslie Earl Ashford, who did not disclose a home address, and another man were accused of knocking on a door at about 10 p.m. at a room at the Quality Inn at 704 Corporate Drive, a police report said.
The suspects barged inside, pinned the guest, Randolph Weaver, 49, of Hayes, Va., to the bed, struck him and stole a cell phone and $20 from the his wallet, the report said.
About an hour later, police charged Ashford with armed robbery and first-degree burglary. Ashford was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond. The second suspect has not been found.
Sex charges
A 20-year-old man was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with three felony sex offenses.
Richard LeQuan Lane, whose hometown was not listed, was charged with first-degree rape, indecent liberties with a child and a lewd and lascivious act. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 secured bond.
2 hurt in wreck
Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $18,000 Thursday in two traffic accidents in Goldsboro, police reported.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle accident at 11:15 a.m. Thursday at West Grantham and North Center streets. Thurman Lee Bunch, 62, of North John Street and Donnie Ray Lucas, 53, of Radford Drive were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Bunch was charged with driving while his license was revoked and a safe-movement violation.
*Damages were estimated at $11,000 in a two-car crash at 3:20 p.m. Thursday at North William and Neal streets,. Christine D. Richardson, 38, of Decoy Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, nine DVD movies, five gold rings, three gold necklaces, 20 pairs of gold earrings, a boy's bicycle, two phones and about $100 were stolen Thursday from a home in the 200 block of Lucky Oak Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Marta Cruz Deodanes, put a $1,647 value on the property. No sign of forced entry was reported, but the home was ransacked.
*Copper tubing and aluminum coils were stolen between March 31 and Thursday from two heat pumps at a restaurant at 614 N. John St., Goldsboro police said. The property was valued at $100. Damage was set at $2,000.
*A metal brake was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from a construction site in the 3700 block of Pikeville-Princeton Road, deputies said. The thief had cut a chain that held the brake to a trailer. The brake was valued at $1,175.
*Three drink machines were broken into Thursday at the Hampton Inn at 905 N. Spence Ave. and about $300 was stolen, police said. Damage to the machines was set at $750.
