Goldsboro Middle School students given chance to learn online

Select students at Goldsboro Middle School will spend the next four weeks preparing for high school online courses.
The Virtual High School, or VHS, exploration course is an enrichment opportunity for students interested in being challenged in such academic areas as psychology, calculus, and chemistry.
Gail Sasser, assistant principal at Goldsboro Middle, said the school is a participant from an extension of a grant awarded earlier to Goldsboro High School. It afforded vacancies to 20 students in grades 6-8, she said.
"Students are selected by their teachers," she said. "They get a taste of what it's going to be like in an online class. It really focuses on acknowledging our students that are achieving above grade level, as well as parent support and the enrichment."
The courses are graded, but students do not receive an academic grade that is on their transcript, she said.
"They get to interact with students across the country and around the world," Mrs. Sasser said.
Students selected to participate in the program include sixth-graders Aleyah Brown, Zacchia Cobb, Shanese Collins, Charquille Parks, and Natarsha Towner; seventh-graders Jovante Cox, Brittany Davis, Joseph Smith, Amber Williams, and Ashley Williams; and eighth-graders Christine Birdine, Lakiyah Campbell, Shakeem Griffin, Stephen Langston, Anthony Miller, Ja'Irie Morgan, Charnice Taylor, Bianca Thompson, Francisco Torres and Devon Williams.
