Man charged with
stealing donation
jar for sick child
PRINCETON -- A 46-year-old man from Selma has been arrested and charged with the misdemeanor larceny of a donation jar for an ailing infant.
Carl Douglas Baines was developed as the suspect after a photograph was obtained from a surveillance videotape at a Princeton convenience store.
Baines is accused of stealing the jug March 16 from the Handy Mart at 106 Dr. Donnie Jones Blvd., Princeton Police Chief Eddie Lewis said.
Hours after flyers were distributed with the suspect's photo, Baines was arrested by Selma police.
The infant, Melodee Allen, who was born two months premature, died.
Lewis credited the work of Signal Scape, a firm that processes data, for enhancing the tape well enough so that a clear photo of the suspect could be obtained. Signal Scape, a Cary firm, often assists law authorities with identifications from videotape and still photographs, the chief said.
"Without the help of Signal Scope," Lewis said, "this crime would have gone unsolved for a longer period of time."
Baines, who was released from custody under a $500 unsecured bond, will have a first appearance in Johnston County District Court in Selma on April 19.
Man wounded
A 24-year-old man was shot Thursday as he left a grocery store at 901 S. Slocumb St., and Goldsboro police are looking for the assailant.
The victim, Qushon Phillips of Olivia Lane, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated in the emergency room and released, a spokeswoman said.
Phillips told police that he was walking from the Manhattan Grocery store at about 2 p.m. when man approached him, argued with him, pulled out a firearm and shot him. The suspect then fled.
Phillips said he could not identify the assailant.
The shooter was described as a black man, about 25 years old, 5-feet-10 and 165 pounds with a medium build and short black hair. He wore a blue shirt and blue pants.
Police patrol officers and investigators responded and began an investigation in order to determine the identity of the shooter. Investigator Dave Cloutier was assigned to lead the inquiry.
3 hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $29,500 in three recent traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $8,300 in a three-vehicle, rear-end crash at 12:53 p.m. Thursday at North William and East Beech streets, Goldsboro police said. Willard Keith Jarnagin, 47, of Derek Drive and James Ledell Scott Sr., 53, of Rosewood Road were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The third driver, Amos Edward Carr, 72, of Hampton, Va., was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*A driver was injured and his car was demolished in a wreck at 6:50 p.m. Thursday on North Claiborne Avenue near Rose Street, Goldsboro police said. Jereme Romel Alston, 29, of Hereford Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with reckless driving after his southbound car had run off the right side, then struck a power pole, a street sign and a brick business sign, the report said. Damage was estimated at $10,000 to Alston's car, $3,000 to the power pole, $2,000 to the Group W Construction sign and $200 to the street sign.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a three-vehicle, rear-end collision at 2:45 p.m. Thursday on West Grantham Street near Claridge Nursery Road, police said. One driver, Brian Craig Hass, 21, of Kernersville, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other motorists were identified as Lydia S. Edwards, 61, of O'Berry Center Road and Cheryl E. Raper, 49, of Lucama.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A man from Florida was robbed Thursday night of $61 by three black men as he walked on Carolina Circle, deputies said. Then Chi Ngo of St. Petersburg reported that the men approached him, one at a time, and ordered him to get on the ground. He threw his wallet away, and the robbers grabbed it and fled. The suspects were described as being 6-feet-5 and 250 pounds, 6-feet and 200 pounds and 5-feet-8 and 170 pounds.
*An estimated $6,272 worth of property, including a violin, was stolen between Wednesday night and Thursday from a home in the 100 block of Kosuda Lane, deputies said. The thief had broken a window to get inside, the report said. The resident, Eric Joseph Mazur, said a French violin, 40 DVDs, video-game equipment, a humidor box, collectible knives, two Japanese swords and other property were taken. Damage was set at $200.
*A laptop computer, a man's diamond ring, a home stereo, a television and a DVD player were stolen between Thursday and dawn today after a door was pried open at a home in the 3000 block of N.C. 55 East, deputies said. The resident, Carlos Juan Lopez, estimated the value of the stolen property at $6,750.
*A 52-inch Cub Cadet riding lawn mower was stolen between Tuesday and Thursday from a barn in the 200 block of Atlantic Road, deputies said. The resident, Sammy Hugh Creech, put a $7,979 value on the mower.
*A central air conditioner was stolen between Sunday and Thursday from a home in the 100 block of Party Road, deputies said. The owner, Reginald Forte, said it was worth $2,500.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*An orange Vermac variable message board that warns drivers of highway construction work was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from the 1000 block of West Grantham Street, police said. The board, valued at $30,000, was owned by Barnhill Construction Co. of Tarboro.
*A stereo was stolen before dawn today after a car window, trunk latch and upholstery were damaged at a repair shop at 209 E. Vine St., police said. The stereo was valued at $50. Damage was set at $750 to the car, owned by Latoya Taylor of Goldsboro. A nearby resident heard breaking glass, saw a man in the car and called police. The suspect fled.
*Stereo equipment was stolen between Thursday and dawn today after two vehicle windows were smashed in a nightclub parking lot at 1907 N. William St., police said. One owner, Adrian Lee Dickson of Kinston, estimated the value of his stolen property at $570 and damage at $200. The vehicle other owner, Kenneth Phillips of Kinston, said his combination radio and compact disc player and a case with 50 CDs were valued at $750. He set damage at $100.
*A tool kit was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday after a truck window was broken in a hotel parking lot at 909 N. Spence Ave., police said. The owner, Danny Ray Jolly of Union, S.C., put a $300 value on the kit and set damage at $300.
Drug charges
Two women were arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with drug violations at a West Grantham Street motel.
Amanda Knox, 31, of Second Street and Stacey M. Southworth, 31, of Georgetown, Ky., were charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
Missing
A 13-year-old boy was reported missing Thursday night to Goldsboro police. Delonte Melvin Weeks of 921 W. Oak St. was described as black, 5-feet-3 and 120 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.
When Weeks was seen last at 6 p.m., he was wearing a black and blue shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts was asked to call police at 705-6572.
