Robbers hit store again in Fremont

FREMONT -- The Fremont liquor store was robbed Tuesday for the second time in three days. The robbers escaped with about $500, authorities said.
Only the clerk was in the store at the time. He was at work when the store was robbed the first time.
The suspects were described as two black men in their 20s, wearing dark clothing with hooded sweatshirts that covered part of their faces.
Wayne County Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said today he did not know if the two suspects were also involved in the robbery of the store on Saturday or the other robberies at convenience stores in Eureka, Stony Creek and Black Creek, but he said the robberies were similar and might be connected.
The robbers fled on foot and were tracked by a sheriff's search dog and handler until the scent was lost. Raecher said he believed the suspects got in a vehicle and fled but no vehicle was seen.
"If anyone saw anything unusual or suspicious at about 5:30 p.m. around the liquor store, he or she should contact the authorities," Raecher said.
Anyone with information was asked to call Fremont police at 242-5152, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 731-1481 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward, if their information leads to an arrest.
The Wayne and Wilson County sheriff's offices and Stantonsburg police are assisting Fremont police. Wayne Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Mike Reid was assigned to assist Acting Fremont Police Chief Wayne Schwark.
The string of robberies started March 20 when three men tried to rob Taylor's C-Mart in Eureka. One armed robber struggled with a customer, and a shot was fired. No one was injured. The robbers, described as being black, fled without getting any money.
Three days later, three robbers held up the Stoney Creek Food Mart at N.C. 111 and Stoney Creek Church Road and got away with about $3,000.
Three robbers on Saturday stole "a substantial sum of money" from the Fremont ABC store at U.S. 117 and N.C. 222, detectives said.
A dark vehicle was seen near all three robberies, Raecher said.
No one was injured in the Wayne County holdups.
The same suspects also may be connected with a recent robbery in Black Creek in Wilson County. A Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant also was held up last weekend in Wilson.
"We need help from people in the community," Sheriff Carey Winders said. "These subjects are dangerous and need to be off the street."
