Parole granted
A man convicted of four counts of armed robbery and sentenced to life will be paroled after almost 30 years in prison, the N.C. Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission has announced.
Leroy Thomas, now 55, was convicted Oct. 28, 1976, in Wayne County Superior Court.
Thomas, who lived on Slaughter Street, was accused of robbing four people on April 2, 1976, at James P. Moore Lumber Co. on Westbrook Road. Thomas got $618 from James P. Moore, Patricia Henry, Shafford Britt and Ralph Mills.
A second man, Willie Wilkins, now 55, of South Slocumb Street, also was convicted and sentenced to life.
The robbery victims testified that the men burst into the lumber company office, displayed handguns, cursed them, forced them to the floor and assaulted them. Moore said he was pistol-whipped, and a bullet was discharged, striking a wall.
The defendants' first trial ended in August, 1976, in a mistrial.
The state's structured sentencing law eliminated parole for crimes committed after Sept. 30, 1994. The commission has the responsibility of paroling offenders who were convicted under previous guidelines.
Drug charges
Three people were arrested Thursday night by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*Decondros McLean, 20, of Central Heights Road was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession of drugs in a jail, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and resisting arrest on South Slocumb Street. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond.
*Leigh Ann Sizemore, 46, of East Mulberry Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance in the 2300 block of North William Street. She was jailed in lieu of a $7,000 secured bond.
*Claude Eugene Artis Jr., who was arrested with Ms. Sizemore, was charged with possession of cocaine and resisting arrest. Artis, 45, of Nelson Drive, was jailed in lieu of a $2,500 secured bond.
2 hurt in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $16,500 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-car collision at 3 p.m. Thursday at West Grantham Street and an entrance to the service road, Goldsboro police said. Alice M. Royal, 71, of East Holly Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Jo Ann Aycock, 70, of Pikeville-Princeton Road, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Ms. Aycock was trying to cross the eastbound lanes of the divided highway and the car that she was driving collided with Ms. Royal's eastbound auto. Damages were set at $3,500.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 5:15 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 117 near Airport Road, the Highway Patrol said. Richard Arnold Kantzer, 84, of Forest Circle was listed today in good condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with charged with driving left of center. The report said his car crossed the center line, ran off the left side and struck a ditch. Damage was put at $2,000.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 in a two-car crash at 4:08 p.m. Wednesday at Riverbend Road and Askew Place, the Highway Patrol said. One northbound driver, Kristen Marie Nelson, 16, of Summer Wind Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The report said another northbound motorist, Barry James Harvey Jr., 47, of Debbie Drive, was slowing to make a left turn into Askew Place at about the same time Ms. Nelson had swerved to the left in a failed attempt to avoid his car.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday on Ada Stroud Road near Camp Jubilee Road, the Highway Patrol said. The eastbound driver, Pablo Ortiz Perez, 24, of Camp Jubilee Road, Seven Springs, was charged with reckless driving. The report said the car, valued at $3,000, had crossed the center line, then had run off the right side and struck a tree.
Arrest in break-in
Goldsboro police arrested a 33-year-pld man Thursday night and charged him with three felony offenses in connection with a break-in .
George Vann Webb of Benton Street was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods.
He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Webb was accused of Tuesday's break-in of an apartment on Benton Street and the theft of a television, two DVD players, DVD movies and video-game equipment, Investigator Dwayne Bevell said. The stolen property was valued at $829. About $500 worth of property has been recovered, Bevell said. Webb also was charged with two traffic violations.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A 32-inch television and a DVD player were stolen between Tuesday and Thursday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 1300 block of East Elm Street, police said. The property, valued at $550, was owned by the resident, G.J. Bryant. Damage was set at $100.
*A 32-inch television, a DVD player, a video-game system and five baseball hats were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from an apartment in the 900 block of Hugh Street, police said. The baseball hats, valued at $150, were owned by Noel Spencer of Dudley. The other property, valued at $400, was owned by the resident, Taja R. Spencer.
