'Kids on Guard' held at armory

Saturday was a special day at the National Guard Amory in Goldsboro.
Children of Guardsmen were able to participate in events that showed them what their parents did in service for their country. The event was called "Kids on Guard."
The event was sponsored in part by American Legion Post 11. On hand for the day were 45 children and about 60 adults.
Young people had the opportunity to learn about the various jobs that Guardsmen perform. They talked with individual soldiers, participated in some physical training, practiced drills and ceremonies and even tried on some of the Guardsmen's equipment.
The Army Community Service group from Fort Bragg was on hand to present a puppet show and food, souvenirs, T-shirts and even dog tags for the children were available.
Children had a chance to climb aboard a helicopter and enjoy a static display of flight.
Post 11 Commander George Vrbetic said lunch was provided by Pizza Inn of Goldsboro and Pizza village of Mount Olive. The post and its auxiliary provided snacks, drinks and coffee.
A highlight of the day's events was the arrival of Maj. Gen. William E. Ingram Jr. and his wife, Lil, who talked about the Guard's mission and what role family members play in supporting that mission.
North Carolina Guard units have played a large role in operations in the Mideast and are also on call to serve at home in state and national emergencies and disasters.
