Garriss appointed to Duplin elections board

Ray Garriss was sworn in to the Duplin County Board of Elections Thursday at the board's monthly meeting. Garriss, 58, replaces Harold Raynor, who resigned to run for county commissioner. Garriss was nominated to the seat by the North Carolina Republican Party, and appointed by the state Board of Elections.
Garriss has election experience, having run for a county commissioner seat in 2004. Currently, he serves on several committees that serve the commissioners, including fire and rescue.
A Wallace native, Garriss is self-employed with Tin City Express Enterprises, his construction management company.
Garriss joins Albert Brown and Carolyn Ingram on the board. "We've just got one purpose in mind, and that's putting on good elections for the county," Brown told Garriss.
Garriss said it would take time to get his feet wet in his new position. "The point I'm at right now is I'm about a quarter of an inch in the water," he joked.
In other business, the board voted to pursue enclosed transportation to deliver election equipment to polling places, and reviewed election officials.
Primary elections are May 2.
