Armed robbers hit local grocery

Three armed, black men robbed a convenience store Thursday night, escaping with about $2,524, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The men entered Stoney Creek Church Grocery at 2043 N.C. 111 North at about 6:15 p.m., brandished handguns and demanded money, the report said.
One suspect leaped over the counter and grabbed money from the register and a bag with the week's receipts. The three suspects then fled in a small, light blue car, the report said.
All three suspects wore dark clothes, and one wore a red bandanna. They were not described further.
The store at the intersection of Stoney Creek Church Road and N.C. 111 also was the scene of a March 1 fatal traffic collision. The driver, Edward Poythress Jr., lost control of his car and it plowed into a gas pump.
Three men also tried to rob Taylor's C-Mart in Eureka on Wednesday night, but they fled empty-handed after fighting with the clerk and two customers. Detectives believe the same men were involved in both crimes.
Wayne County sheriff's officials urged store employees and customers to be alert for suspicious activity in and near the stores, get descriptions of any suspects and their vehicles and report them immediately.
Sheriff Carey Winders warned clerks at rural convenience stores to be on guard and report suspicious activities.
