Residents can take items to landfill on April 22 without paying

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners approved several proposals aimed at making the county a cleaner place at their meeting Tuesday.
The commissioners voted to declare April 22 as Amnesty Day at the county landfill. Disposal fees for residents will be waived that day to encourage people to bring items for disposal.
The project only applies to residents, excluding commercial businesses and haulers. For more information on Amnesty Day, people can call the county landfill at 689-2994.
Also, the commissioners approved the annual Litter Sweep program, which is sponsored by the state Department of Transportation in all 100 counties in an attempt to clean up the state's highways and waterways.
Civic clubs and groups, businesses, churches, schools and even families and individuals are urged to help clean up roadsides April 17-30. Cleaner roadsides can help attract more tourism, county officials said, and could boost the recruitment of new businesses, which can help keep taxes down, they pointed out.
In other business, commissioners approved the awarding of a bid for a methane gas collection system at the landfill.
County officials received six bids and chose Monroe-based Dawn Development Co. The company's bid amount was $181,000.
County Landfill Director Lloyd Cook said the project will put 5,000 linear feet of pipe into the ground to connect the pipeline throughout the landfill.
Landfill waste emits methane gas and the pipelines gather the gas before it get into the atmosphere. The gas travels through the pipes until it is taken to a flare, where the methane is burned, he said.
