Fremont police
investigate thefts
FREMONT -- Three unlocked vehicles and a church have been broken into in Fremont, Acting Police Chief Wayne Schwark said Tuesday.
"All it takes to stop most thieves," Schwark said, "is to lock the vehicle doors, or better yet, to take the valuable items into the house."
Another citizen reported that two strangers entered a church during a family gathering and had time to go through two pocketbooks and steal about $25, Schwark said.
The witness told police that the thieves could have taken more than $1,000, if they had not been interrupted by a family member who walked into the room. The witness could not describe the suspects, and the thefts were not discovered until the suspects had left, Schwark said.
"All that the family had to do," Schwark said, "was to lock the purses out of sight in a vehicle or in another room in the church. Stopping theft is very simple in most cases -- lock up the valuables."
Drug charges
Three Goldsboro residents were arrested Tuesday by the Goldsboro police Selective Enforcement Unit and charged with felony drug offenses after the search of a home in the 200 block of Workman Street.
Officers obtained and executed a search warrant and found 17.5 grams of cocaine in the home.
The resident, Shaquana Monique Green, 27, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine and possession of a stolen handgun. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Ja-Moz Lovell McMillian, 24, of North John Street also was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine and possession of a stolen handgun. He was jailed in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Lamont Eugene White, 28, of Cella Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine. He was jailed in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
2 hurt in wrecks
Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $33,450 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a four-vehicle collision at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on New Hope Road near Central Heights Road, Goldsboro police said. Two drivers -- Christy Lynn Modica, 28, and Fracine Yvette Hill, 30, both of Parkstown Road, LaGrange -- were charged with following too closely after the rear-end collision. The report said the first driver, Kimberly R. Smith, 40, of Pineridge Lane, had stopped because of a turning vehicle. The other motorist was identified as Melissa Ann Nichols, 33, of Duffy Drive.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-car crash at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday at West Ash and North George streets, police said. Porter B. Barnes, 60, of Olivia Lane was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. A westbound driver, James Harold Wise, 69, of Slapout Road, Mount Olive, was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said Ms. Barnes was going south. Damages were set at $700.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 13 near Paul Hare Road, the Highway Patrol said. One northbound driver, Granville David Lee, 72, of Dunn, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. The other driver, Lindel Richard Thompson, 59, of U.S. 13 South, had stopped for traffic before turning into a driveway, the report said.
*A southbound car ran through a stop sign at Mark Edwards and Parkstown roads at about 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, struck a bank and a highway sign and stopped in a field, the Highway Patrol said. The driver fled. The car sustained about $5,000 in damages and was registered to Ricky Dale Helt of Linwood Avenue, the report said. Damage to the sign was set at $250.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $17,000 in a two-vehicle, head-on crash at 9:10 a.m. Thursday on Old Smithfield Road near Ferry Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. Randy Earl Hayes, 19, of Old Smithfield Road, Princeton, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said. Hayes, who was going west, was charged with driving left of center. The report said the car that Hayes was driving had collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer truck that was driven by Michael Gerald Whaley, 50, of Woodland Church Road, Albertson, for Anthony B. Andrews Logging Co. of Trenton.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A gun safe -- with five rifles, a shotgun and a revolver and ammunition -- was stolen Tuesday after a door glass was broken at a home in the 900 block of Sixth Street, Goldsboro police said. The resident, Steve Eugene Wiggans, estimated the value of the stolen property at $3,000 and damage at $25.
*Three DVD players were stolen and a 50-inch television was damaged Tuesday at a home in the 300 block of Devonshire Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, the report said. The resident, Stanley Wayne Young, estimated the stolen property's value at $155 and damages at $1,000.
*A blue, four-door 1990 Mercury Gran Marquis was stolen Tuesday from the Berkeley Mall parking lot, police said. The owner, Ethen Isaiah Royal of Goldsboro, put a $5,000 value on the car.
Teen charged
A young teenager was arrested by Goldsboro police and charged in juvenile petitions with financial transaction card theft and financial transaction card fraud.
The teen, who was not identified because of his age, was accused of using a stolen credit card to obtain cash and cable television service, Investigator Dwayne Bevell said. Billy Faison of Hollowell Street reported the theft of the credit card on Jan. 31.
