Prices head sky-high again

Gas prices are back on the rise, frustrating drivers in Wayne and surrounding counties.
Prices topped $2.50 per gallon for unleaded regular at a number of gas stations in and around Wayne early today.
"When you're spending close to $60 to fill the tank, you know something is seriously wrong," said Anthony Palmer, who drives from his home in Clayton to a construction site in Goldsboro each day. He was filling up at an Exxon station at the intersection of U.S. 70 West and Perkins Mill Road.
"I don't understand it, either," Palmer said. "I mean, when Katrina hit and prices went up, people didn't like it, but we understood. Then the prices started going back down, close to $2. So why are we inching back up toward three bucks again? When is the government going to start going after these gas stations and protecting us from a life of poverty?"
Prices at most stations have increased sharply this week. Gas was $2.58 per gallon for unleaded regular today at the Trade Mart at the intersection of New Hope and Central Heights roads -- 20 cents higher than it was two days ago.
The price was $2.45 for unleaded regular and $2.65 per gallon for premium at the Kwik Mart in Fremont. In Mount Olive, unleaded regular was $2.49 at the Exxon station on Breazeale Avenue and $2.46 at the Trade Mart on N.C. 55.
In the city, unleaded regular was $2.45 at Adam's Auto Wash on Spence Avenue.
In Wilson, prices varied from $2.53 per gallon for unleaded regular at Turner's Mini-Mart on Ward Boulevard to $2.39 per gallon at the Trade Mart on Forest Hills Road.
East of Goldsboro, unleaded gas was $2.47 per gallon at the Handy Mart on U.S. 70 near Walnut Creek and $2.55 per gallon at the Falling Creek Service Center in western Lenoir County.
At the Fuel Warehouse at the intersection of U.S. 70 and N.C. 11 near Kinston, unleaded regular was $2.43 per gallon.
Raleigh prices ranged from $2.55 to $2.43 for unleaded regular.
