FREMONT -- The Fremont Town Board of Aldermen interviewed several candidates Tuesday for the town's vacant police chief's job.

Acting Chief Wayne Schwark was among those interviewed during the session that started at 3:30 p.m. and lasted until 7:55 p.m. in Town Hall.

Town Administrator Kerry McDuffie declined to identify the other candidates or say how many other people were interviewed. He said all were employed and he did not want to jeopardize their current jobs.

McDuffie said the board took no action on the position and added that he did not know when a new chief would be hired to replace Ben Reid.

The 64-year-old Reid stepped down Feb. 14 after serving about two and a half years as chief. He had told the board during a special meeting Jan. 31 that he would resign Feb. 21, but he accelerated his plans.

Reid worked with the Police Department for 41 years.
