3 men charged
in tractor theft
Two Wayne County men have been charged in the theft of a $45,000 tractor from a construction site in New Hanover County and a third suspect is being sought.
Travis William Stafford, 27, of Hope Boulevard, Dudley, and Gary Daniel Jackson, 26, of Old Mount Olive Road, Dudley, were arrested by New Hanover County sheriff's detectives. Each was charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle and felony conspiracy. Each was released from custody in Wilmington after posting a $1,000 secured bond.
A third man, Larry Keith Lane, 30, of Kelvin Lane, is being sought by authorities on the same charges.
The case unfolded Feb. 17 when Wayne County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour discovered a John Deere tractor in a field off Dollard Town Road. The tractor had been reported stolen from T.M.C. Taylor Construction Co. of Wilmington. It was returned to the owner.
Farfour then coordinated an investigation of the theft with New Hanover County Sheriff's Detective K.W. Murphy. The three men were developed as suspects, and two were arrested.
"Anyone who was contacted in Wayne County about buying equipment from any of these men is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481," Capt. George Raecher said Tuesday. "We believe that there might be other stolen equipment in the area."
Woods fires
Two woods fires were put out Tuesday, but no damages were reported, officials said.
A fire near the Wayne County Animal Shelter behind Brick Street consumed about three acres, Assistant Goldsboro Fire Chief Gary Whaley said. A straw field and woods along the Neuse River were destroyed.
"We put out the fire near the buildings," Whaley said.
Goldsboro firefighters answered the 6:30 p.m. call with two engines, a ladder, a brush truck and a command car. Rosewood volunteers assisted with two tankers. They remained for about two hours to make sure that the fire did not threaten any buildings. The N.C. Forestry Service also responded and took over a further investigation of the fire today.
The owner of the land and the cause of the fire were not known, Whaley said.
An afternoon woods fire was put out near Decoy and Duck Ridge drives. Saulston volunteer firefighters and the Forestry Service responded.
Man arrested
A 68-year-old man charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of his son was taken into custody Tuesday by Goldsboro police.
Warren Allen Rudisill was indicted by the Wayne County Grand Jury in the death of 23-year-old Henry Rudisill on Aug. 15 in their home on North Leslie Street. The father was accused of fatally shooting the son during an argument.
Rudisill, who is undergoing medical treatment, was released from custody by District Court Judge Les Turner on a $50,000 unsecured bond on the recommendation of police Investigator G.N. Lynch, the arresting officer.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A television, a DVD player and 15 pocket knives were stolen between Friday and Tuesday from a home in the 300 block of Blackjack Church Road, deputies said. The resident, Cecil Ray Edwards, put an $800 value on the property. The thief had damaged two doors and had thrown a brick through a sliding glass door to get inside, the report said. Damages were set at $1,200.
*Gunshots damaged walls and a window Tuesday at a home in the 200 block of Peachtree Drive, deputies said. The resident, A.C. Dant, estimated damages at $600.
*Boxes of sockets and screw drivers were stolen between Saturday and Monday after a storage compartment and a tool box were damaged on a truck at the Wayne County Landfill, deputies said. The property was valued at $30. Damage was set at $175.
*A jar with about $25 in change was stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 4300 block of U.S. 117 Alternate, deputies said. The resident, Lakeda Kornegay, estimated damage at $200.
Break-ins
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment was stolen Tuesday after a window air conditioner was pushed into a home in the 900 block of Prince Avenue, police said. A resident, April T. Faison, put a $285 value on the stolen property. Damage was set at $150.
*Three drink machines were damaged at the Little River Shopping Center on West Grantham Street, and about $300 was stolen between Friday and Tuesday, police said. Damages were estimated at $1,095.
2 hurt in wreck
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $5,075 in a one-truck wreck Friday on Five Points Road near Hereford Drive, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Walter Barrett Phipps, 26, of Country Club Drive, Mount Olive, and his passenger, John Drespenser, 27, of U.S. 13 South, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Phipps was charged with failure to maintain lane control.
Drug charges
A 47-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police and charged with two drug offenses on North James Street.
Claude Pettiway, who did not disclose a home address, was charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
Missing
A 16-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing before dawn today by relatives to Goldsboro police. Dashae "Shae" Lamone Smith of 1904 N. William St. was described as black, 5-feet-2 and 130 pounds with blond hair, brown eyes and a light complexion.
When she was seen last at 5 p.m. Tuesday, she was wearing a multi-colored shirt, black jeans, black and white shoes, a black coat with fur and a white hat. Anyone with information on her whereabouts was asked to call police at 705-6572.
