Hurricane Katrina evacuees residing in Wayne County could receive money from the North Carolina Helping Neighbors Fund for medical needs, mortgage or rental payments and utility payments.

The money, designated to the county by Gov. Mike Easley, will be distributed by the Wayne County Department of Social Services, said Judy Pelt, the department's director.

Evacuees in need of assistance can apply at the department's Social Services Annex, located at 1916 Highway 117 North, for a portion of the money, which is about $3,400, Mrs. Pelt said. Since funds are limited, she said the money will be distributed until it is gone.

Beginning March 13, applicants must bring picture identification and documentation saying the person has registered with the Federal Emergency Management Service. The office will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last day to apply for money is March 24, Mrs. Pelt said.

For more information, call the Social Services office at 580-4034 and press the No. 8 for assistance.
