County rabies clinics planned

The Wayne County Animal Shelter is holding four rabies vaccinations clinics during two weekends beginning March 18, Chief Control Officer Jerry Pate said.
The owner of every dog and cat older than 4 months should have the animal vaccinated to prevent contraction of the virus. The vaccinations cost $5 per animal, Pate said.
The first clinic will be March 18 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Eastern Wayne High School, which is located at 1135 New Hope Road. Later that day, from 1 to 3 p.m., another clinic will be at Southern Wayne High School, which is located at 124 Southern Wayne Road in Dudley.
The next two clinics will be March 25, with the first one from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Grantham Elementary School, which is at 174 Grantham School Road. The last clinic will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the old Pikeville School Building.
Any animal receiving its first vaccination will be given the dose, but the owner should vaccinate the animal again one year later, Pate said. Then, the animal would need a vaccination every three years.
Owners of animals that have been vaccinated previously must bring proof of that vaccination for the animal to receive a three-year dose. If that documentation is not provided, the animal will receive a one-year vaccination, Pate said.
The clinic is also an opportunity for anyone to bring an unwanted or stray animal for impoundment.
