Applications for new WCPS high school

Wayne Early/Middle College High School is now accepting student applications.
Sixty seats in the new schools' classes will be open to juniors and seniors who qualify. The project is part of a national high school reform initiative designed to reach students who could benefit from a rigorous academic schedule.
Students who apply must go through an interview process before being accepted. Once enrolled, they will attend college classes at WCC in the morning, then take high school classes in the afternoon. The college credits earned can be put towards a two-year associate degree or two years of college credit at an accredited university.
Lee Johnson, principal of the new high school, said that parents need to understand that Wayne Early/Middle College High School is not an alternative school for trouble students.
"Students attending this progressive school must be able to complete honors level courses as well as college courses. This school is ideal for students wanting to get an early start on their college education, students who will benefit from a smaller school setting with more individual attention and guidance, or students who are academically capable but have become disenfranchised with their education," she said.
Applications will be taken for the 2006-2007 school year until March 31. Applications are available at all six public high schools, as well as online at www.waynecountyschools.org. For more information, call Lee Johnson at 705-6187.
