Man wounded;
couple robbed
A Goldsboro man was wounded twice Sunday night during an attempted robbery in his apartment in the 400 block of North Carolina Street, Goldsboro police reported.
Another Goldsboro man also was assaulted and robbed and a woman was robbed early Sunday by a man in an apartment in the 100 block of Harding Drive, police said.
The shooting victim, Robert Earl Newsome, 41, was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Newsome told officers that as he was sitting on his porch at about 10:05 p.m., a tall black man approached him and then followed him inside. The two men then fought and the intruder demanded repeatedly that Newsome give up his money, the report said.
During the struggle, the intruder pulled a handgun and shot Newsome twice.
Tyrell Wayne Rawls, 18, of Bizzell Court was assaulted and robbed at about 2:50 a.m. of $600 and a cell phone, and Karen Ann Hayes, 17, was robbed of $80 and two cell phones in her Harding Drive apartment. His phone was valued at $100, and her phones were valued at $250.
After the assault, Rawls ran to a nearby store and called police and the intruder fled, the report said.
The suspect was described as black, about 21 years old, 6 feet 4 inches tall and 160 pounds with a slim build, long black hair and brown eyes.
10 hurt in wrecks
Ten people were injured and damages were estimated at $33,900 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A passenger was injured and the car was demolished in a wreck at 3:38 a.m. Sunday on Old Mount Olive Road near Walter Fulcher Road, the Highway Patrol said. John Council, 24, of Andrews Circle was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Their driver fled after the car had run off the left side, had come back on the road out of control, run off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned. The car, valued at $6,000, was registered to Latisha Braswell Dudley of Brentwood Drive, Dudley.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $10,000 in a three-vehicle collision at 6:45 p.m. Sunday on West Grantham Street at the Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway overpass, Goldsboro police said. Josiah Thornton, 23, of Grifton was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. A second driver, Lathan Coolidge McLain, 81, of Kinston, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The third motorist was identified as Daniel Lee Willette Jr., 26, of West Lockhaven Drive.
*Three people were injured in a two-car crash at 5:59 p.m. Saturday at North Berkeley Boulevard and New Hope Road, police said. One driver, Yvonne P. Lovelace, and two passengers, James Potter, 62, and Daniel Lovelace, 9, all of Pleasant Pines Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. Yvonne Lovelace was charged with a safe-movement violation after the rear-end crash. The other northbound driver was listed as James Edward Morris, 55, of Jay Drive, LaGrange. Damages were set at $150.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 7:51 a.m. Saturday at Wayne Memorial Drive and 11th Street, police said. One northbound driver, Edna Geraldine Mozingo, 52, of Weston Circle, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. The other motorist was listed as Gerald Ronald Hill, 45, of North Martin Street, Mount Olive.
*A passenger was injured in a two-car collision at 5:28 p.m. Friday on Cashwell Drive near North Berkeley Boulevard, police said. Gloria Best, 49, of Country Acres Road left the hospital against medical advice, a spokeswoman said. Her driver, Thomas S. Best, 49, of Country Acres Road, was going west on Cashwell. The other driver, Austin Miles Kennedy, 20, of North Mill Street, Pikeville, was crossing Cashwell and was charged with a yield violation from a driveway. Damages were put at $2,000.
*A driver was injured and the car was destroyed in a wreck at 4:30 a.m. Thursday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Amhurst Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Kyong Hui Grubs, 38, of Sherrell Place was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said the car had left a curve out of control, crossed the center line, run off the right side, struck a sign and a ditch and overturned into a telephone box. The car was valued at $5,500. Other damage was put at $250.
*Two people were injured in a two-vehicle collision at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 70, west of Perkins Mill Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Ashley Cox, 53, of South Claiborne Street, and her passenger, David A. Best, 61, of Thel Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other westbound motorist, Douglas Michael Coker, 52, of Sandhill Drive, Dudley, was charged with improper passing. Damages were set at $3,000.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*About $300, a digital camera, four DVDs, a game and a video game were stolen from one resident, and a laptop computer, 10 DVDs, a modem and $300 were stolen from a second resident from an apartment in the 400 block of North Hillcrest Drive, Goldsboro police said. The first resident, Nichole Kelly, put a $555 value on her property in addition to the cash. The second resident, Jennifer Turner, said her property was worth $2,175, in addition to the cash. No sign of forced entry was listed.
*About $290 worth of clothing was burned Sunday on a clothes line in the 100 block of DuPont Circle, police said. Firefighters doused the smoldering clothes and referred a further investigation to police.
*A blue and white Suzuki motorcycle, a leather riding jacket and a riding helmet were stolen between Saturday and Sunday from T&T Dealer Services at 500 N. George St., police said. The stolen property was valued at $7,500.
*A television, a combination radio and compact disc player, a DVD player and a video cassette recorder were stolen between Friday and Saturday from a home in the 100 block of Mobile Circle near Dudley, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The resident, H.M. Tucker, put an $830 value on the property.
*A blue, two-door 1994 Pontiac Firebird was stolen between Friday and Saturday from the 1100 block of Clingman Street, police said. The car, valued at $2,000, is owned by Ruth Kohde.
*A green moped was stolen Sunday from the 1100 block of Poplar Street, police said. The resident and owner, Samuel Henry Merriweather, said the moped was valued at $1,300.
Missing
Two teenaged girls who live at 3862 Emmaus Church Road, Mount Olive, were reported missing Friday to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Pamela Nicole Bradley, 16, was described as white, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 140 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a tattoo on her arm. Brittany Anette Lee, 15, was described as white, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 130 pounds with blonde hair and hazel eyes.
No clothing description was available for either girl. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of either is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
