House fire

A predawn house fire today at 303 E. Elm St. was considered suspicious and referred to Goldsboro police for a further investigation.

Assistant Fire Chief Eric Lancaster said an investigation had determined that the fire had started in two places outside of the home. The building had been subdivided into two apartments.

The renter of the downstairs apartment, George Wynn, saw the fire as he was coming home and called 911, police said. Only his apartment was damaged.

"Upon our arrival, fire was showing in the rear of the structure," Lancaster said. "We had a quick knockdown and had the fire under control in 15 minutes."

The fire had started in two chairs and a couch outside and then spread to the building and ran into the attic, Lancaster said.

Sixteen firefighters answered the 1:50 a.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed an hour and 22 minutes to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.

Damage was estimated at $6,000 to the 1,000-square-foot house that was valued at $30,000 and owned by Diane Weeks of Goldsboro. Damage to contents was set at $100. The contents were valued at $1,000.

The upstairs apartment was occupied by Anthony Holloman.

Both drivers hurt

Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a collision Friday at U.S. 117 and Five Points Road, the Highway Patrol said. Amelia Judith Carlock, 40, of Old Grantham Road and Sheila Ann McNair, 30, of Odom Street, Calypso, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.

Ms. Carlock was charged with a yield violation. The report said her eastbound car had collided with Ms. McNair's southbound auto at 5:43 p.m.
