Building in Wayne County experience an upward swing in January and February. The value of building permits issued in the first two months of 2006 was more than $10 million, besting the $8.8 million over the same period in 2005.

In January, 64 permits were issued, valued at nearly $6.2 million. That figure nearly doubled the value of the 42 permits issued in December, at $3.3 million. It also topped numbers from January of 2005, when 62 permits were issued at almost $4.4 million.

Two residential projects valued at $250,000 were the most expensive permits issued in January. January's largest residential project was a three-story home being built by contractor Borden Best in Pikeville. The 4,689 square-foot home will be located in the Poplar Knoll subdivision. Also at $250,000, Varona Construction is building a 3,364 square-foot home in the Friendswood subdivision.

Fifty-five permits were issued for the month of February, valued at more than $4.8 million. The number of permits was down from the same month last year, as 66 permits were issued, but the value surpassed February 2005's $4.4 million.
