Fire destroys
barn, contents
DUDLEY -- Fire destroyed a storage barn and its contents and damaged the owner's home and sport utility vehicle early Sunday at 136 Quiet Drive, off Arrington Bridge Road, a fire official said.
A neighbor saw the fire, woke up the resident, Jeremy T. Flowers.
Indian Springs Fire Chief Leroy Blizzard said Flowers had used an outdoor grill the night before and speculated that high winds early Sunday may have blown the coals out and ignited the barn.
A golf cart, a lawn mower and other property in the barn also were destroyed. The barn and its contents were valued at $20,000. Siding on Flowers' mobile home and plastic on the rear of his 2005 GMC Envoy also sustained an estimated $5,000 in damages.
Indian Springs volunteers answered the 6:57 a.m. alarm with Arrington and Dudley offering mutual aid.
Accidents
Nineteen people were injured and damages were estimated at $94,100 in 15 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A motorcyclist from Goldsboro was injured in a wreck with a car at 5 p.m. Monday on South Audubon Avenue near East Pine Street, Goldsboro police said. Jerry Eugene Rouse, 35, of Merrywood Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. No charges were filed. Damages were set at $3,500.
*A driver was injured in a two-car crash at 1:34 p.m. Monday on North Herman Street near East Beech Street, police said. Ursula M. Carson, 33, of Greg Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. Arthur Evans, 51, of South Claiborne Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $2,600.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 12:55 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 117 and O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Denise Kearse, 45, and her passenger, Leslie Kearse, 13, both of Savannah, Ga., and a driver in the other vehicle were treated. Matthew Blake Crawford, 24, of Crescent Creek Drive, Pikeville, was charged with a stoplight violation.
*A driver was injured in a two-car crash at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Genoa and Pecan roads, the Highway Patrol said. Joseph F. Ingram, 41, of Augusta Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. Yovami Hernandez Gabrera, 20, of Old Mount Olive Road, Dudley, was charged with a stop-sign violation. Damage was set at $1,500.
*A motorcyclist was injured in a wreck at 10:59 p.m. Friday on Pikeville-Princeton Road near Vail Road, the Highway Patrol said. John Jarrod Jernigan, 27, of Carolina Wren Circle was listed today in good condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired. Damage was put at $1,000.
*A driver was injured in a one-truck wreck at 5:24 p.m. Friday on Perkins Mill Road near U.S. 70, the Highway Patrol said. Sheri Dawn Dunn, 36, of Ellis Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with a lane-control violation. Damage was fixed at $3,000.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,700 in a three-vehicle collision at 4:24 p.m. Friday on U.S. 117 near Industry Court, the Highway Patrol said. Belinda E. Walker, 35, of Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, and her passenger, Joyce Edmundson, 67, of U.S. 117 North, and another driver, Daniel Jamaal Smith, 21, of Adler Lane, were released after emergency-room treatment. Smith was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*Three drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $28,300 in a five-vehicle crash at 1 p.m. Thursday at the U.S. 70 bypass and Oak Forest Road, the Highway Patrol said. The drivers -- Julia Christina Hobbs, 30, of South Running Deer Circle, Dudley; Antonio Gilbert Usher, 25, of Christy Drive, Dudley, and Allison W. Sauls, 39, of Scallop Place, were released after emergency-room treatment. John Kenneth Newsome, 70, of Morehead City, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 5 p.m. Thursday on Dallas Road, the Highway Patrol said. The report said one eastbound driver, Richard Don Kirby, 47, of Brookwood Drive, had swung wide to the left as a second eastbound driver, Andrawri Core, 33, of Arrington Bridge Road, Dudley, passed on the right. But Kirby then turned right into a driveway, the report said, and vehicles collided. No charges were filed.
*A driver from Fremont was injured and vehicle damages were set at $6,000 in a wreck at 9:05 a.m. Thursday in the Belfast Academy parking lot off U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. Nancy F. Evans, 53, of East Main Street was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $11,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 12:12 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and N.C. 581, or Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jeffrie Duane Hubbard, 51, of Daniel Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed.
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 4:57 p.m. Thursday on N.C. 111 near Stoney Creek Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kimberly A. Fields, 42, of Big Daddy's Road, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with a lane-control violation. Damage was set at $3,000.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday on New Hope Road, the Highway Patrol said. Nolan Ryan Lancaster, 16, of Walden Woods Drive, LaGrange, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other driver was identified as Tharon Gray Artis, 37, of Hare Road.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday on Salem Church Road near Vail Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kylie G. Hill, 17, of Nahunta Road, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed. The car, valued at $4,000, was demolished.
*A driver was injured in a one-truck wreck at 6:03 p.m. Feb. 19 on Falling Creek Church Road near U.S. 13, the Highway Patrol said. Russell Hampton Parker, 23, of N.C. 55 West was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired and a seat-belt violation. The truck, valued at $2,500, was destroyed.
Fraud reported
A man gave a salesman a check for $63,944 for a vehicle at Chevrolet-Cadillac of Goldsboro on Monday, and later the check was found to be drawn on a fraudulent account, Goldsboro police reported. The report said the man had asked the salesman to hold the check until Friday when money would be available.
When CCOG attempted to confirm the check, it was found fraudulent. The man was described as black, 22 years old and 6-feet-4 with a slim build, black hair and brown eyes. The report did not say if the vehicle was taken.
Teen charged
A Goldsboro teenager was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police after a residential break-in in the 100 block of Head Street. Shawnquel Camorra Futrell, 18, of Ball Street was charged with attempted breaking and entering and attempted larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $7,000 secured bond on the felony charges.
Officer Claude Jackson arrived at the home as a man was running away. Investigator Dwayne Bevell arrested Futrell, interviewed him and took him to the magistrates' office, where Futrell's bond was set.
Jewelry stolen
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*About $15,000 worth of antique jewelry, $2,175 worth of other property and $1,000 in cash were stolen Monday from a home in the 100 block of Laurel Patch Place. William Maldonado Perez said the other property included a television, video-game equipment and two cell phones. Damage was set at $250.
*A total of $2,094 was stolen Monday from U.S. Cellular at 112 Five Points Road. An employee said that as he was talking on the phone to another store, a man entered the store and asked about paying his phone bill. When the employee turned around from the phone, the envelope with the cash and the man were gone. The man was described as black, about 18 to 25 years old and 5-feet-10 to 6-feet tall with a slim build.
*A rifle, a tool box, a lawn mower and a DVD player were stolen Monday after a truck window was smashed in the 2500 block of East Ash Street, Goldsboro police said. The owner, Ashley Taylor of Clinton, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,550 and damage at $200.
*A saw, a grinder and a drill were stolen between Feb. 5 and Monday after a mobile home door and window were damaged in the 100 block of Timothy Street, deputies said. The owner, Dixon R. Steward, estimated the value of the tools at $200 and damages at $125.
Car recovered
FREMONT -- A car reported stolen from Statesville was recovered Sunday by Fremont police in a parking lot. Officer Norris Thompson saw someone riding in it and then found the car abandoned at Joyner's Great Valu supermarket. He checked the tags and discovered that it had been stolen. The white, four-door 2001 Chevrolet Impala was registered to a man who had gone to Mexico and had left it to a cousin, Acting Police Chief Wayne Schwark said Monday. The car, valued at $15,000, had not been damaged. It was towed and stored.
