Bogus solicitation
Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders wants area residents to be alerted to an improper solicitation that is being sent to residents and businesses. According to the Sheriff's Office, the mail supposedly originated from a business called The Day Group out of London, United Kingdom, and attempts to sell a World Wide Research Report.
Even though the publication does state the item is not a bill, officials say it is printed in such a way that can cause confusion and even prompt payment. It requests money be wired to Bank of America USA or charged to credit cards.
Law enforcement reportedly attempted to contact the business, but were told that the man handling the solicitation was out of town and would provide no further details.
Winders stressed that residents not take anything at face value. "People do not get billed for anything legitimate unless they are already knowledgeable of what items or services they have purchased," he said. "These manipulative persons often target elderly people and try to take advantage of a person's good nature and trust."
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*An accidental shooting that occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday at Olivia Lane and Slaughter Street. Dominic Saunders, 26, Benton Street, told police he was with friends when a subject displayed a handgun with a missing magazine, believed to be unloaded. The gun went off and Saunders had shot himself in the leg. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
*An unknown subject made away with two security boxes used for movies and games from Blockbuster Video on Friday around 7:05 p.m. It was unknown how much the merchandise was worth. The store alarm was activated, and the subject was seen leaving on foot in the direction of Berkeley Boulevard.
*Tonya Sykes, 39, Stronach Avenue, told police an unknown subject had used her check card and PIN numbers to make $487 worth of purchases without her permission.
*Mary Jewel Casey, 23, Handley Acres Drive, told police her locked vehicle had been entered by an unknown subject and her purse was taken. Her wallet was later located on Quail Drive, and a credit card had been used to make several transactions.
False report
Goldsboro police arrested a 29-year-old LaGrange man Friday and charged him with filing a false police report. Robert Edward Dukes of West Washington Street allegedly reported he was the victim of an armed robbery in he 100 block of South Center Street, when he had actually been involved in an affray in the 2300 block of North William Street. Dukes was placed in Wayne County Jail under $500 secured bond.
