Save-A-Lot supermarket has signed a lease to open in the former Winn-Dixie on Berkeley Boulevard in Goldsboro, a spokeswoman said.
Established in 1977, Save-A-Lot is headquartered in St. Louis, Mo.
According to company officials, Save-A-Lot offers about 1,250 grocery items. Save-A-Lot stores stock a limited assortment of groceries to keep costs down for consumers, they said.
"We are a unique grocery store that offers shoppers high quality groceries at savings up to 40 percent compared to traditional grocery stores," said Jaime Folsom, spokeswoman for Save-A-Lot. "And we're excited to bring that format to Goldboro."
The 37,390-square-foot location on Berkeley Boulevard had been occupied by Winn-Dixie, but has been vacant since the company left North Carolina last fall.
Save-A-Lot plans to open in mid-2006, Ms. Folsom said. "It probably would open in late summer."
With the Berkeley Boulevard store, Save-A-Lot will become the newest entry into the Goldsboro grocery market, joining Food Lion, which has four stores; Southern Family Markets, which operates one store; and Piggly Wiggly, which has a store in Mount Olive.
Food Lion is currently renovating a former Piggly Wiggly store on Ash Street to replace its Spence Avenue location.
