Relatives sought
in traffic fatality
The Wayne County district office of the Highway Patrol is continuing its search to find relatives of a victim in Tuesday night's fatal, head-on collision on N.C. 55.
"It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack," said 1st Sgt. T.M. McLeod, who supervises the patrol office.
The collision occurred at about 11 p.m.
The other driver, Angelico Reyes Cruz, 31, of Billy Price Road, Seven Springs, was injured and taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. His condition was not immediately available today.
Cruz will be charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and driving without a license, authorities said. His bond was set at $100,000.
Gun, jewels stolen
A man who was accused of stealing a firearm and jewelry from a woman's home was arrested Wednesday night by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies had been dispatched to the man's house to charge him with unauthorized use of a vehicle. When the man gave them permission to search, the officers found the firearm, marijuana and some jewelry.
Jason Lawrence Taylor, 27, of Eagles Nest Road, Dudley, was charged with felony larceny of a firearm, felony larceny, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of two secured bonds totaling $5,500.
Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said Taylor was accused of stealing the handgun, valued at $350, a diamond bracelet, a diamond ring, two other bracelets and two gold chains from a home in the 100 block of Kelly Drive.
Joann Wellons said Taylor was one of three men who had come to her home to work on her floor. She said the jewelry was worth $6,300.
Fire
MOUNT OLIVE -- A sprinkler system was credited Tuesday night with preventing extensive damage from a fire at Bobby Denning's Inc. at 1130 N. Breazeale Ave.
Assistant Mount Olive Fire Chief Greg Wiggins said a cleaning solvent was being applied to a bathroom floor and the fumes from the solvent ignited a pilot light on a gas water heater just outside the door. A flash fire erupted, setting off the sprinkler head.
Eight Mount Olive firefighters answered the 6:35 p.m. call with Dudley and Smith Chapel volunteers assisting.
Damage was limited to $800 to the building and $500 to contents.
Confession
A five-year-old armed robbery was apprently solved Wednesday when a man came to the Goldsboro Police Department and confessed to the crime. Jose Antonio Santiago, 40, of East Mulberry Street was charged with the holdup of the Little Closet on Spence Avenue on Feb. 27, 2001. He told officers he confessed because of his religious beliefs, Investigator Chad Calloway said. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $20,000 bond.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A 9-millimeter handgun, a rifle, a stereo, a portable DVD player and a combination DVD and video cassette recorder were stolen between Wednesday and dawn today after a door was pried open at a home in the 3900 block of N.C. 55 East, deputies said. The resident, Anthony Joseph Tucker, put a $960 value on the stolen property.
*A .45 caliber handgun and a television were stolen Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 2900 block of U.S. 13 North, deputies said. The thief also damaged another television in an attempt to steal it. The resident, Calvin Eugene Seymore, estimated the value of the handgun and the TV at $1,000. Damages were set at $500.
*A billfold with $50 and personal papers was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a car in the 300 block of Nancy Drive, deputies said. The thief had thrown a brick through the window to get inside. The resident, Bill Harrell, estimated the stolen property's value at $87 and damage at $250.
*A disabled, blue 1994 Jeep Cherokee that had been left along Indian Springs Road was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday, deputies said. The owner, Eduardo Feliciano-Valentin of Mount Olive, said the vehicle was worth $3,500.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Someone opened an unlocked door to a vacant Goldsboro Housing Authority apartment in the 900 block of South Audubon Avenue, pulled a hose into the home and turned it on, flooding the unit, police said. The vandals then tried to burn trash in the stove. Damages were set at $150.
*A thief broke a window on a 2004 Jeep Wrangler at Deacon Jones Ford-Lincoln Mercury between Tuesday and Wednesday and then stole the vehicle's hardtop cover, damaging the latches, police said. The cover's value and the damage amount were not immediately known.
*A compact disc player was stolen between Wednesday and dawn today after a van window was smashed in the 1900 block of North William Street, police said. The resident and owner, Myriam Luna, estimated the player's value at $200 and damage at $50.
Accident
Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car accident at 1:55 a.m. today at South John Street and Wayne Avenue, Goldsboro police said. Jeremy Ramel Alston, 28, of Hereford Drive, Dudley, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
Drug charges
Three people were arrested by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged after a search of their home in the 100 block of Ginger Drive.
Derrick Monte Jackson, 28, and Rosemary Ann Coley, 31, were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana and manufacturing marijuana. Jackson also was charged with felony possession of a handgun by a felon and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $50,000 bond. Ms. Coley was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and jailed under $5,000 bond. Tiffany Michelle Long was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and released from custody.
