Schools to destroy some records

On March 1, Wayne County Public Schools will begin destruction of records for all students categorized as "Exceptional Children," "Special Education Students," and "Students with Disabilities" born before Sept. 1, 1979 who attended Wayne County Public Schools or the former Goldsboro City School system.
Three types of records will be destroyed. They include testing, evaluation, and individual education plans. The destruction of student records process is in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
The school system does not destroy records in a students cumulative folder that include attendance data, transcripts, grades, medical documents, discipline records, etc.
It is the responsibility of students or their guardians to maintain exceptional children records after the student is 26 years old.
Students and guardians have until Feb. 28 to request copies of records being destroyed. Contact the Exceptional Children's Program at 705-6027 for more information.
