The 2006-07 calendar for Wayne County Public Schools has been approved, with students' first day slated for Friday, Aug. 25, and the next school year to conclude Thursday, June 7.

Two years ago, the N.C. General Assembly changed legislation for traditional school calendars. They voted that schools start no earlier than Aug. 25 and end no later than June 10, as an effort to help boost travel and tourism for the state.

Like the current calendar, students will have a shorter winter break and will take first semester exams at the high school level after returning from the break.

A calendar committee, made up of parents, teachers, administrators, school board members, central office staff and the liaison from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, as well as a representative from Wayne Community College, created the calendar. School personnel were also able to offer feedback. The initial draft of the calendar was approved at Monday night's school board meeting.

According to the calendar, teachers will report to their schools on Friday, Aug. 18. Their last day will be June 13.
