damaged in fire;
railroad ties burn
A home at 1701 Ball St. and a large number of railroad ties at Dewey Development Co. at 705 S. George St. were damaged heavily in Friday fires. No injuries were reported.
The home "was fully involved when we got there," Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Langston said today.
Langston said the power had been cut off while the resident was away. When the power was restored, a portable heater was on and ignited clothes.
Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the small home and $10,000 to contents. The home, valued at $40,000, was occupied by Georgetta Atkison and owned by Woodard Realty of 3801 E. Ash St. Contents were valued at $15,000.
Fifteen firefighters answered the 10:30 a.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car. The first unit arrived at 10:35 a.m., and the fire was controlled at 10:44 a.m. They remained until 11:35 a.m. to put out the fire, ventilate the home and investigate the cause.
When a volunteer firefighter called in a fire at 11:45 p.m. Friday at Dewey Development Co., Langston said, "It looked like sunset in the west."
The fire had started in a pile of railroad ties, away from the street and close to a chipper plant. Langston said the ties had been burning for a while before the fire was seen.
Two ladder trucks were set up to pour water on top of the fire. No building was involved, but 15 firefighters needed eight hours to put out the fire.
Langston said the plant manager, Fred Jones, arrived and assisted in using some company equipment to spread out the ties so that the fire could be extinguished. Langston said the ties had been soaked in creosote and burned easily.
The next Fire Department shift arrived at 8 a.m. and maintained a hose line from a hydrant to the scene to prevent any hot spots from flaring up.
No damage estimate was available.
Langston thanked Mar Mac, Pinewood, Belfast and Elroy volunteer firefighters for standing by in case of another fire in the city.
6 hurt in wrecks
Six people were injured and damages were estimated at $22,500 in four weekend traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-car collision at 3:25 p.m. Sunday at N.C. 111 South and the entrance to the Food Lion shopping center, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Tori M. Folk, 48, and her passenger, Shirley Inez Scales, 72, both of North Lincoln Drive, Dudley, and the other driver, Tonia April Blizzard, 27, and her passengers, Justin Herring Hooks, 13 months, and Harley Bass, 10, all of Scott Street, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Folk, who was going north, was charged with a stoplight violation after the car that she was driving had collided with Ms. Blizzard's westbound auto.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 2:07 p.m. Sunday at a traffic light at the new U.S. 117 and South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the old U.S. 117 bypass, police said. The report said a northbound car that was driven by Renatta Q. Lane, 25, of Edgerton Street had collided with a southbound pickup truck that was driven by Steven Eugene Voltaire, 53, of Corbin Road. No charges were filed, because police could not determine who was at fault.
*Damages were set at $6,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:42 a.m. Sunday on Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. A northbound motorist, Samuel Clem Wallace, 84, of Lakeview Drive, was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said Wallace's car had collided with a westbound van that was driven by Jeannette Denise Johnson, 29, of Kornegay Street.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a two-car wreck at 1:05 p.m. Friday on North William Street near Ash Street, police said. One southbound driver, Jacklyn Paulette Wells, 27, of Hollowell Street, left Wayne Memorial Hospital against medical advice, a spokeswoman said. She was charged with reckless driving. The report said Ms. Wells' auto had collided with a parked car that was registered to Janice A. Smith of South John Street. Damages were put at $3,000.
Drug charges
Seven people were arrested over the weekend by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*Laccota Deroe Woods, 27, of South Slocumb Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine. He also was held on a probation violation and an outstanding arrest order. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $26,000 secured bond.
*Anthony David Williams, 33, of Jeffrey Drive, LaGrange, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver crack cocaine and possession of cocaine. He also was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while his license was revoked and fictitious registration. He also was held on two outstanding arrest orders. He was jailed in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
*Derrick Jermaine Joyner, 19, of Dallas Road was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He was jailed in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
*John Franklin Clark, 53, of West Pine Street was charged with possession of cocaine, no liability insurance and an equipment violation. His secured bond was set at $3,000.
*Christopher Leon Hill, 23, of Beal Street was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and no operator's license. His secured bond was set at $1,500.
*Terryl Lemont Ray, 24, of West Vine Street was charged with possession of cocaine. His secured bond was set at $1,000.
*Shawn P. Bronner, 22, of Redwood Trail was charged with possession of cocaine. His secured bond was set at $1,000.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Three laptop computers, four cell phones and seven walkie-talkies were stolen Saturday from the Radio Shack store at 405 N. Berkeley Blvd., police said. The property was valued at $4,638.
*A dark green, four-door 1996 Pontiac Sunbird was stolen Friday from the Pinewood Square parking lot in the 1000 block of North Spence Avenue, police said. The car, owned by Debbie Faison of Goldsboro, was valued at $3,000.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A computer and a keyboard were stolen between Feb. 2 and Saturday after a door and a window were shattered at a home in the 2100 block of Stevens Mill Road, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Kevin David Amory of Goldsboro, estimated the value of the stolen property at $400 and damages at $800.
*A washer-dryer combination, a stove and a bedroom set were stolen from a rental home in the 800 block of Old Smith Chapel Road, deputies said. The owner, John Brent Brewer, said the property was worth $1,100. No sign of forced entry was reported.
