Workshops to help parents better prepare children for kindergarten will be offered at three locations around Wayne County next month.

Barbara Huff is chairman of the group "Continuity for Success," a collaboration of the state PTA and local agencies including WAGES Head Start, Wayne Partnership for Children, Wayne County Public Library, and Wayne County Public Schools.

The free one-hour "Children Preparedness Workshop for Parents" will be held on three evenings at locations around the county, she said. The March 2 session will be in the library at Charles B. Aycock High School; on March 16, it will be held in the Southern Wayne High School library; on March 30, it will be at the Wayne County Public Library. Each session is scheduled from 6-7 p.m.

The sessions are designed to share ideas parents can incorporate using things in their home, Mrs. Huff said.

Attendees will receive a copy of the kindergarten curriculum, which includes an overview of what children will be expected to learn during the year they are in kindergarten. Parents will also receive free books as an incentive to encourage reading to the child.

With kindergarten registration approaching on April 2, Mrs. Huff said there will be information and a booklet from the public school system about the registration process.

The workshops started out with a pilot program several years ago, she said, through efforts of the national PTA and Head Start groups.

Interpreters will also be on hand at each session, she said, but child care will not be provided. For more information, call 736-7733.
