Paper boxes taken
A thief who may have wanted to be well-read stole four newspaper vending machines from stores near U.S. 117 South, according to reports filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
A Goldsboro News-Argus machine was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from Best Gas and Grill at 4453 U.S. 117 Alternate; a USA Today box was stolen between Thursday and today from a store at 3885 U.S. 117 Alternate, and USA Today and News and Observer machines were stolen today from the Food Lion supermarket at 118 Five Points Road in Mar Mac.
The vending machines -- and the coins inside -- were valued at a combined $1,535.
Parole considered
A man convicted of four armed robberies and sentenced to four life terms is being considered for parole.
Leroy Thomas was convicted Oct. 28, 1976, in Wayne County Superior Court. The N.C. Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission is conducting its required annual review of Thomas' case to determine the feasibility of parole.

The state's current structured sentencing law eliminated parole for all crimes committed after Sept. 30, 1994. The commission is responsible for paroling offenders convicted under previous sentencing guidelines.
4 hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,440 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Three people were injured in a two-car collision in which damages totaled only an estimated $100, Goldsboro police said. The cars collided at 5:19 p.m. Thursday at Royall Avenue and North Jefferson Street. One driver, Chauncey Janet Wooten, 24, and her passengers, Aniyah Solomon, 6, and Nakiyah Wooten, 2, all of Vanderbilt Circle, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Rosa B. Hinton, 60, of North Jefferson Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 12:53 p.m. Thursday at Patetown and Country Day roads, police said. Theresa R. Alston, 37, of East New Hope Road was released after emergency-room treatment. A westbound motorist, Lynn Marie Anderson, 43, of Old Black Creek Road, Fremont, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The report said Ms. Anderson's sport utility vehicle had collided with Ms. Alston's northbound car. Damages were set at $2,000.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 4 p.m. Thursday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Graves Drive, police said. A northbound driver, Darla Jean Honeyman, 50, of Nicholas Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Ms. Honeyman was making a left turn and her car collided with an oncoming northbound van that was driven by Mutahar A. Algharazi, 32, of Holly Road.
*A Wayne County school bus and a car sideswiped each other at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday in the Eastern Wayne High School parking lot, the Highway Patrol said. The school bus which had one passenger was driven by Catherine Ann Gleason, 49, of Peele Road. The other motorist was identified as Mary E. Hamilton, 51, of Clingman Street. No charges were filed. The bus had about $40 in damages, and the car had about $800 in damages, the report said.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Jewelry, 10 sports jerseys, clothing, shoes and a digital camera were stolen Thursday from a home in the 200 block of Workman Street, Goldsboro police said. The thief had thrown a brick through a window to get inside, the report said. The resident, Linwood Thomas, put a $7,400 value on the stolen property. Damages were set at $130.
*Jewelry, a laptop computer, video-game equipment, a DVD player and 30 DVD movies were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged an apartment in the 700 block of Sandhill Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Monique M. Milligan, estimated the value of the stolen property at $4,520 and damage at $250.
*A wedding ring set, an Air Force graduation ring, a wedding band and $20 were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 200 block of Five Points Road, deputies said. The resident, Bradley Wilson Meadows, estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,420 and damage at $250.
*A total of $1,250 was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from a man's coat pocket, deputies said. Gary Bevell of Goldsboro said the cash was taken from his convenience store at 2049 U.S. 117 South.
*Eleven windows were smashed between Dec. 20 and Thursday at a rental home in the 1100 block of Norwayne School Road, deputies said. Damages were estimated at $1,015.
Drug charges
A 31-year-old man was arrested Thursday night by Goldsboro police and charged with felony and misdemeanor drug violations on East Walnut Street.
Tyron Lee Warren of Holt's Pond Road, Princeton, was charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
Missing
Two teenaged girls were reported missing Thursday by relatives to Wayne County authorities.
*Britney O'Brian, 15, of 1860 Nahunta Road, Pikeville, was described as white, 5-feet-6 and 160 pounds with a stocky build, shoulder-length brown hair and blue eyes. She has not been seen since 1 a.m. Sunday. No clothing description was available.
*Jamika Shamone Carmichael, 13, of 124 Astor Court was described as black, 4-feet-11 and 116 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion. When she was seen last at 4 p.m. Thursday, she was wearing a red shirt, blue jeans, black and brown athletic shoes and a coat with a fur collar.
