Baby's body found at Goldsboro lift station

A newborn baby was found Thursday in the Goldsboro sewer system with the umbilical cord still attached, Goldsboro police reported.
The baby was dead when it was found at about 10:30 a.m. at a lift station behind Edwards Truck Stop in the 900 block of Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 117 South bypass.
Neither the sex nor race of the child were released by police, who did not know if the infant was born dead or alive.
An autopsy was to be conducted today at the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill to determine the infant's cause of death.
Goldsboro police are seeking help in locating anyone who might have information about the identity of the baby or the baby's mother.
"We're really concerned if it is a young or older mother who delivered the child without medical assistance and that she could be in medical distress," police Sgt. Anthony Carmon said.
