The driver of this car was killed Wednesday after his car collided with a tractor-trailer truck at the intersection of U.S. 13 South, Mills Road and Hood Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Melvin Leo Woodard, 74, of Langston Drive, was traveling north on Mills Road at about 1 p.m. when he failed to stop at a stop sign, state Highway Patrol trooper D.B. Finch said. The truck driver, Douglas Eugene Whaley, 36, of Mount Olive, was neither injured nor charged. Whaley's truck sustained about $5,800 in damages. Woodard's 1989 Honda was demolished. The fatality was the fourth this year on Wayne County roads. Grantham volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene.
