Pair charged
A Goldsboro couple was arrested today by Wayne County Sheriff's deputies and charged with four felony offenses in connection with a break-in at Eastern Wayne High School.
Deputies M.B. Sasser and Aaron Cantwell responded at 1:32 p.m. to a burglar alarm at the school. They stopped two people in a car nearby at New Hope and Mark Edwards roads, found property in the car, took them to the Sheriff's Office and charged them with the crimes.
William Vaughn Lee, 34, of North James Street and Mary Elizabeth Daw, 20, of North Virginia Street were charged with breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods and possession of burglary tools.
The deputies found two damaged vending machines, a broken window and a damaged door at the school. Damages were estimated at $875.
Two televisions, two scanners, a set of head phones and two printers were stolen and recovered. The stolen property was valued at $735.
Lee was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $60,000 secured bond. Ms. Daw was jailed in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
5 men charged
Four men were arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with multiple felony drug offenses after an investigation and search of an apartment in the 400 block of North Carolina Street.
Deleak Curtis Lofton, 25, of Bladestone Drive, Pikeville, and Richard Shawnquale Elliott, 21, of Fussell Street were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Elliott, who also was charged with resisting arrest, and Lofton were placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $100,000 secured bonds.
Retho Junior Howard, 18, of East Lockhaven Drive and David Allen Dodson, 25, of Longleaf Avenue were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. Each was jailed in lieu of $50,000 secured bonds.
Goldsboro police patrol officers assisted in the search.
A fifth man, Satarus Burt, 23, of East End Circle, was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. His secured bond was set at $2,500.
Witnesses sought
Anyone who witnesses a traffic collision on Jan. 28 at U.S. 13 and U.S. 117 was asked to contact the district Highway Patrol office in Goldsboro at 731-7960.
The report said that at 6:25 a.m. an eastbound sport utility vehicle that was driven by Deborah Grace Strickland, 42, of Thunder Swamp Road, Mount Olive, had collided with a northbound car that was driven by Taquetia Darnette Robinson, 44, of South Breazeale Avenue, Mount Olive.
The intersection is governed by a traffic light. But the investigating trooper could not determine who was at fault.
Damage was estimated at $3,500 to Ms. Robinson's 1998 Chevrolet and $2,000 to Ms. Strickland's 2004 Ford.
2 men wounded
Two men were wounded Monday by gunshots in separate assaults, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Ming Xiang Wang, 29, of Goldsboro told police that he was leaving a parking lot at 2814 Cashwell Drive at 8:09 p.m. when a black man displayed a handgun and ordered him not to drive off. The report said Wang started his sport utility vehicle, and the suspect shot Wang twice.
Wang was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
The assailant was described only as being about 6-feet tall, and he wore dark clothes and a dark mask.
Julius Reid, 21, of Goldsboro reported that as he was walking on Elm Street at 6:54 p.m., a person in a dark vehicle fired several shots at him and fled. Reid was struck in the elbow. He was taken to the hospital, treated and released. He could not describe the assailant.
8 hurt in wrecks
Eight people were injured and damages were estimated at $70,000 in nine recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 11:15 a.m. Monday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Hospital Road, Goldsboro police said. Cindy Hill, 48, of Kandis Drive was listed today in good condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Her driver, Ricky Maurice Hill, 46, of Kandis Drive, was leaving the hospital parking lot. The report said Hill's pickup truck had collided with a northbound car that was driven by Christine D. Richardson, 38, of Decoy Drive, Pikeville. No charges have been filed.
*A driver was injured and the car was demolished in a wreck at 9:19 a.m. Sunday on N.C. 111 near Mount Carmel Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Melissa Jean Phillips, 16, of Edwards Road, Princeton, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The report said the car had run off the right side, come back on the road, run off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. Ms. Phillips was charged with a lane-control violation. The car was valued at $5,000.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $14,000 in a one-car wreck at 9:10 p.m. Friday on Arrington Bridge Road near Sleepy Creek Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Jaliscea Shantelle Brinson, 16, and her passengers, Shameka Brinson, 17, and Charicea James, 14, all of Old Mount Olive Road, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. The report said the northbound car had run off the left side in a curve and struck a power pole and a utility trailer. Jaliscea Brinson was charged with driving left of center. The car, valued at $6,000, was destroyed. Damage was set at $4,000 each to the pole and trailer.
*A westbound motorcyclist was injured in a crash with a deer at 6:45 a.m. Friday on Gurley Dairy Road near Pikeville-Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. David Lane Gorham, 44, of Old Smithfield Road was treated, admitted and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. No charges were filed. Damage was fixed at $5,000 to the bike.
*A driver was injured in a one-truck wreck at 10:20 a.m. Thursday on Dobbersville Road near Britt Road, the Highway Patrol said. Betty I. Sutton, 58, of Hollandsworth Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said the pickup truck had run off the right side, then had come back on the road, run off the left side and struck a ditch. Damage was fixed at $3,500.
*Damages were estimated at $16,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 7:58 a.m. Thursday at Mark Edwards and Parkstown roads, the Highway Patrol said. One northbound driver, Simon Rudy Hill, 59, of Newsome Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was listed as Yupeng Liang, 19, of South Berkeley Boulevard.
*Damages were put at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 3:57 p.m. Thursday at N.C. 581 and Braswell Road, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Alan Worth HInes, 23, of North Martin Road, was charged with a safe-movement violation and hit and run. The report said Hines had started a left turn and his sport utility vehicle collided with an oncoming, southbound SUV that was driven by Katherine P. Ham, 48, of Radford Drive.
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 3:25 p.m. Wednesday on New Hope Road and a driveway to Eastern Wayne High School, the Highway Patrol said. Lisa Anne Ayers, 16, of Bolling Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. The report said she had made a left turn from the parking lot and the SUV had run off the right side into a ditch and overturned. No charges were filed. Damage was set at $2,500.
*Damages were estimated at $10,500 in a three-vehicle collision at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Church Road, Stoney Hill Road and Chancery Drive, the Highway Patrol said. An eastbound driver, Eric Richard Marquard, 33, of Goodnight Street, Pikeville, was charged with a yield violation. The report said Marquard's pickup truck had collided with a northbound sport utility vehicle that was driven by Lori Ann Denning, 35, of Adler Lane. Then Marquard's pickup ricocheted into a stopped, westbound car that was driven by Christa J. Butcher, 28, of Pikeville-Princeton Road, Pikeville.
