Meachen retires from News-Argus

News-Argus Executive News Editor Jim Meachen has retired after 34 years with the newspaper.
Meachen, 61, started with the News-Argus as a weekend beat reporter and part-time sports reporter in January 1968, while serving in the Air Force and stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
He joined the News-Argus staff full-time in October 1971 as sports editor and Sunday edition news editor. In 1986, he was named executive news editor.
He earned two first-place awards for sports writing from the North Carolina Press Association and has written a Sunday auto column, "Behind the Wheel," for the newspaper for more than a decade. The column also appears in several California newspapers.
The column will continue in the News-Argus.
Meachen is president of the Fredericksburg Homeowners Association and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro.
A native of South Dakota, he is a graduate of South Dakota State University. Meachen and his wife, Luci, have three children and two grandchildren. She retired in September after working for more than 30 years as a registered nurse at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
News-Argus Publisher Hal Tanner Jr. said Meachen has been a valued member of the News-Argus staff.
"We appreciate his dedicated years of service and wish him well in his retirement," Tanner said.
