The Pikeville Town Board of Commissioners voted to authorize town attorney Jean Hollowell to proceed with legal action against resident Hugh Howard for alleged violations of the town's abandoned structures ordinance.
According to the resolution signed by Mayor Herb Sieger, Howard owns two structures determined unsafe by the Wayne County Department of Inspections. Howard was notified of the violations in November, and failed to appear at a meeting of the Board of Commissioners, Sieger said.
In a letter dated Nov. 4, then-town administrator Lonnie Graves detailed nuisance conditions at Howard's properties, including holes or cracks that might attract rodents or snakes, garbage that constitutes a fire hazard, and violations of the state building code.
The Commissioners voted unanimously to direct Ms. Hollowell to petition the Wayne County Superior Court to direct Howard to to correct the violations.
In other business, commissioners also voted to accept a $750,000 grant from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund. The money will be used to assist in the town's sewer project.
